Guidelines for completing your application
Thank you for requesting details of this vacancy with Hyndburn Leisure. We hope this guidance
note will help you and improve your chances of being invited for an interview.
Application Form
With the application form you will have received a job description, a person specification and
other essential information about the job. This information is to help you to decide if you want to
apply for the job, and you will find it helpful in completing your application form.
Job Description
This explains the duties of the job for which you are applying.
Person Specification
When a person specification is included in the job pack, this mentions all aspects of the post which
are essential – qualifications, skills, knowledge, abilities and sometimes additional factors such as
being able to drive, or having to start work at a certain time. The panel cannot assume that you
have the relevant qualities, therefore you must demonstrate how you meet these criteria, or you will
not be short-listed. Desirable criteria are those which are not essential, but could help your
application. If several applicants all demonstrate that they fulfil the essential criteria, then a scoring
system will be used, and those applicants with the highest scores will be invited for interview.
Qualifications
The Qualifications section refers to qualifications relevant to the post – it is not necessary to mention
all qualifications, if they are not related to the job for which you are applying.
Training
Any additional courses or events which you have attended, should be mentioned if they are relevant
to the post.
Equal Opportunities
Hyndburn Leisure is committed to equal opportunities. The Trust will ensure that the selection,
training and promotion of employees is based solely on the criteria of merit and ability and that no
job applicant or employee will receive less favourable treatment on grounds of ethnicity, age, sex,
gender reassignment, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, marriage or civil partnership.
Selection criteria and procedures are formulated and frequently reviewed to ensure that individuals
are selected, promoted and treated on the basis of relevant merits and abilities. In order to ensure
that this policy is maintained, information about applicants for posts is collected and analysed. It
does not form part of your application, and will be removed prior to shortlisting. It is for this reason
that C.V.’s are not accepted. All information is treated in the strictest confidence
The Trust welcomes applications from persons with a disability, who can demonstrate that they fulfil
the essential criteria for the post.
Disabled Applicants
Do you consider that you have a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and
adverse effect on the ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities, and which has a long-term
effect? If so, and you fulfil all of the essential criteria of the post, to the satisfaction of the
shortlisting panel, then you will be guaranteed an interview.
Criminal Records Check
For some posts, such as those, which work with children or those with access to financial or legal
issues, you will be asked to undergo a check of your criminal history. This will only be if you have
been successful at interview. It will be carried out through the Criminal Records Bureau. You will
be required to pay the cost of your personal check.
Medical clearance and references
All appointments are subject to a satisfactory medical report from the Trust’s Occupational Health
Practitioner.
One of your referees should be your current employer or last employer if you are not employed at
the moment. If you have never been employed, please telephone Human Resources for further
guidance. References will only be sought after an offer of employment has been made. Therefore
it is recommended that you do not give notice in your present post until the job offer is confirmed.
Political Restriction
Some posts are politically restricted under the provisions of Section 3 of the Local Government and
Housing Act 1989.
Probationary Period
All new entrants are subject to a probationary period.
No Smoking Policy
The Trust operates a No Smoking Policy. Smoking is not permitted in any offices or buildings

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
This section is very important. If you leave it blank, or do not put examples of how you meet
the criteria on the person specification, you will not be shortlisted for interview. We cannot
assume what you know, or what experience you have. For example, if we ask for
experience of dealing with people, you must show what experience you possess - it is not
enough just to say that you have ‘experience of dealing with people’. Shortlisting for this
appointment will be based upon an assessment of how applicants meet the criteria outlined
in the person specification.
Please include details of duties and responsibilities of your present and previous
employment which you feel are relevant and any information that you feel may be helpful to
