OMENA HISTORICAL MUSEUM 2015 SUMMER CLASS SCHEDULE
Come and have fun exploring arts and crafts projects and discover your creativity! Our curriculum includes
technique development and creative exploration. Students will work on projects, building skills as they take
artistic ideas from concept to creation. Payments are due in full at time of registration. Thank you for your

FIRST CHOICE! All classes available for participants age 16 and older.
To help make OHS classes a success and remain affordable, help spread the word! There is typically a
minimum number of students needed for a class to run, so tell family and friends not to miss out on great
opportunities for enrichment – and just plain fun.
PLEASE NOTE: Artist Julie Sanco is offering a free wheat weaving demonstration on Wednesday,
July 15 from 10 – 11:30 am (see details below). Please join her and learn how to make ‘corn dollies’
and other ornaments. Sign up early - presentation is limited to 20.
FOUR SEASONS IN ACRYLIC – Paint four 3 x 3 mini canvasses with Gail Koch. No experience necessary;
anyone can do this! These mini canvasses are fun and easy to do. Gail will instruct you step by step. The class
will meet in two 2 1/2-hour sessions. Please wear an old shirt – paint sometimes flies when you are having fun.
Class fee covers all materials including four canvasses and one easel for your personal rotating seasonal
artwork. Class meets two times.

Gail Koch is a life-long artist with a deep love of Omena having been born and raised here. After getting married and moving
away, she returns frequently to this beautiful place.
PAINTED SILK COLLAGE WITH CHAR BICKEL - Learn the relationship between shape, color, and brush
stroke in this 3-hour workshop. You will complete a small collage of your own design made in the medium of
Char’s work. Class fee includes materials.

Since 1991, Char Bickel has been creating collages in her studio in Northport. She loves combining painting and fiber traditions
and joyfully telling a story about living in Northern Michigan.
A FREE OPEN DEMONSTRATION WITH ARTIST JULIE SANCO! THE FOLK ART OF CORN DOLLIES - A Wheat
Weaving (also known as wheat plaiting) 90- minute Presentation. Objects and decorations have been made
from wheat since the earliest communities, and were associated with prosperity and fertility. Julie will have her
lovely straw ornaments available for sale at the end of the demonstration.

AN ENCORE TO BELIEVE IN FAERIES! Design and Build Your Own Whimsical Fairy House
Leelanau is the “land of enchantment,” but you can take that motto to a new higher level when you learn to make
your own fairy houses! Inspired by fairy houses of the coast of Maine and becoming a national craze, fairy
houses are perfect for Omena. We’ve got the best ‘Gnome Depot’ for building materials here in our woods, and
the entire village is chock-full of whimsy! Mary Loveless has been creating fairy house subdivisions in her woods
for three years; she’ll teach you how to start your own. However if you want to sign up, you should start
collecting interesting natural objects that catch your eye – acorns, pine cones, especially beautiful rocks
(Petoskey and Leland Blue), pebbles, twigs, shells, bird feathers, moss, etc. Voila! Find a secret place and invite
the fairies into your yard. Class fee includes materials.

Loveless Cottage – 13895 East Ingles Bay Road (off Omena Point Road) where the pink flamingos will greet
you.
Mary Loveless lives in Menphis most of the year but finds her heart in Omena. She’s a retired magazine writer and current freelance writer with no discernible qualifications to teach this class other than a lifelong affinity for arts and crafts and a winning
way with wire and glue.
BEADING 101 – Develop your own style and create your unique bracelets using new colorful beads, or
reinvent your old beads into something unexpected. Learn two techniques in three hours of fun with designer
Paula McMenamy. Class fee includes materials.

Paula McMenamy is a former schoolteacher and has also taught classes in several forms of needlework and beading. She started
making her own jewelry several years ago and is usually seen wearing beautiful beads of her own creation.
UNIQUELY YOURS - FLOWER ARRANGING - Bring your clippers and your personal favorite container
(maximum 10” tall) and we will have an afternoon arranging all the pretty local flowers from Mary’s garden, UPick Flowers, the Farmer’s Market, and maybe even the roadside. After a brief demonstration by Mary, you can
try your hand at making your own creation. All flowers and supplies will be provided. Please bring to class a
check or cash in the amount of $15.00 for materials fee, check to be made payable to Mary Smart.

Mary’s home – 12570 Craker Road
Mary Smart has worked in the floral and design fields and continues to compete nationally at flower shows. She will
discuss the elements of design as you create a lush arrangement of traditional flowers for your home.
UTILIZE PAPERCRAFT SKILLS TO MAKE CARDS– You will make two greeting cards with envelopes. One
will be a pot of flowers, and the other either butterflies or owls. You can convey Happy Birthday, Thinking of
You, Get Well, or Thank You greetings (your choice). You will use stamps, punches, ribbons, beads or buttons,
and the Cuttlebug machine to emboss paper. All materials will be provided, but if you have a cutting tool,
scissors, a ruler, and adhesive, please bring them to class.

Jacquie Johnson worked for the By the Bay Scrapbook and Papercraft store in Sutton Bay for four years and continues to
scrapbook and design cards on Monday afternoons at the Omena Fire Hall where she meets with her ‘scrappy’ friends.

THE LANGUAGE OF POETRY – Move from image to poetry in this three-week workshop. Learn to craft
poems from the original details in your life and to capture in words jolts of deeper awareness. Class will
culminate in an optional reading of participants’ work. Class meets three times.

Nancy Fitzgerald, poet, and retired creative writing instructor at The College of St. Scholastica (Duluth MN) where she taught for
many years. Her latest book, ‘Take A Twig’, is available at Dog Ears Books in Northport.
ARTFUL SWEETGRASS BASKETRY – Make your very own locally grown basket! Using Leelanau-grown
pine needles and grasses, traditional weaving techniques will be learned and applied to create a small basket,
trivet, bracelet, or all three! Join multimedia artist Sarah Chenault to learn how to “coil” a sweetgrass basket in
the way the Gullah artists of Charleston, South Carolina make theirs employing the West African tradition.
Two 2-hour class sessions. All materials will be provided. Please bring your own scissors to class and a check in
the amount of $25.00 made payable to Sarah Chenault. Note: Students can visit Sarah’s Pinterest page for

Sarah K. Chenault is a multimedia artist from Texas living in Los Angeles and she frequents her beloved Omena as much as
possible. She received her BFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis and MA in Latin American Studies from UCLA.
From living abroad in Spain and Colombia she learned the gratification and fun that came from integrating her creative abilities
with cultural studies and has since aimed to use these two in her career.
EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE SIDE IN WATERCOLOR WITH JULIE SANCO – For Beginners – Advanced
Learn an easy way to plan your watercolor paintings from start to finish with new techniques in watercolor
painting that will take you to the next level. Class will cover how to improve your compositional skills,
directional line, value, texture, elusively, and time. When you leave this class you will be on the way to creating
great work. Class is suited to those who are new to painting, or to watercolor as a medium; artists who want to
try a new approach; or anyone who wants an opportunity to paint with other artists who love color. Class meets
two times.

Julie Sanco (B.S., MED) taught art for 35 years at Seaholm High School in Birmingham MI as well as summer classes and night
classes. She has exhibited in several hundred art shows exhibiting handcrafted ceramics, original watercolor paintings, and
mixed-media folk art. Each spring she returns to her Mexican retreat in San Miguel de Allende studying under German artist
Edina Sargent. You can visit her at The Last Straw Studio located on 205 Chandler in Leland.
MAH JONGG FOR BEGINNERS – Are you interested in learning how to play the very popular game of Mah
Jongg that originated in China in the 18th century and imported to the US in the 1920s? Peggy Rod will teach you
the basics of this ancient game of skill, strategy, and calculation that involves a degree of chance; at the same
time you will put your brain on full strength. The focus will be on tile recognition, strategy, rules, and lots of fun.
Classes are small and designed to give attention to each person’s needs. Class meets three times.

Peggy Rod is a retired TCAPS elementary teacher. Her retirement activities still include teaching; now it is teaching adults to play
Mah Jongg. She has enjoyed the game since 2000.

OMENA HISTORICAL MUSEUM SUMMER PROGRAM POLICIES
Registration Policy. Advance registration is strongly recommended. Full payment is required for registration.
Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early to prevent class cancellation due to low enrollment.
Payment. Payment must be by check made out to the Omena Historical Society Summer Program. Please do not send
cash. Only completed registrations that are mailed with the tuition check will be processed to secure a spot.
Class Confirmations. Confirmations will be sent by email upon receipt of your registration. If your requested class is
full, we will contact you shortly after the receipt of your registration. We will do our very best to place you in your
alternate choice class.
Withdrawal/Refund Policy. Cancellations must be made one (1) week prior to the start of the class. Refund checks
take two weeks for processing. No refunds will be processed after the class has begun.
Class Cancellations. OHS reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet its minimum student enrollment.
Cancellations will be made 1-3 days prior to class start date. If a class is cancelled by OHS for lack of enrollment OHS
will offer a full refund to the student unless an alternate choice was given. (See application)
Pricing. Pricing is listed as OHS/member (discounted) and Non-member. If you wish to become a Caretaker Member
at the time of registration, we will honor the reduced fee for OHS members. See registration form for categories.
Waiting Lists. Waiting lists will be formed and maintained after the class limit has been reached. As spots in the class
become available, persons on the list will be contacted in order and offered an opportunity to register for the class.
Some instructors will add another section if a class is very popular
Photos. OHS volunteer photographers take photos of programs and events. Names are never used in marketing
materials. We do not tag individuals in online media.
NSF Checks. A $25 fee will be charged for any check returned due to insufficient funds.
