Course Objectives: The primary purpose of this class is to develop your skills in
talking to groups. The course is designed to help you learn how to develop and express
your thoughts effectively and with confidence. Specifically, you will gain experience in
developing and presenting informative, persuasive and ceremonial speeches. A second
objective of the course is to improve your ability to critically evaluate the communication
of others.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course, students will
be able to:
1. Develop and present effective speeches for diverse audiences and occasions
2. Demonstrate critical listening skills.
General Student Guidelines:
- PLEASE NOTE THAT LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
AND MISSED SPEECHES OR EXERCISES CANNOT BE MADE UP. If an
emergency prevents you from turning in or completing an assignment, you must
contact the instructor before the assignment is late to discuss a possible time
extension.
- ALWAYS TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE! (This includes no texting!)
- Laptop computers may be used only for taking notes; any other use during
class is prohibited.

- Accommodations: Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation
based on the impact of a learning disability should contact Diagnostic Learning
Services to schedule an appointment with a Learning Disabilities Specialist
(Upstairs in Library – Rm. 1766). Students requiring accommodations for
physical or other types of disabilities should contact the Counseling Department
(253-3040).
- Attendance and Dropping the Course: Students are expected to attend
every class for the entire class period; three tardies or early departures count for
one absence. If you must miss a class, contact the instructor to have the
absence excused. While the instructor may drop any student who misses more
than two classes, it is your responsibility to make sure a drop has been recorded
if you intend to drop the course. The last day to drop without a “W” is Sept. 6,
and the last day to drop with a “W” is Nov. 15. After that date, all students must
receive final grades.
- You are responsible for all information covered in class, whether or not you are
there. Save all graded papers until you receive your final course grade. My reply
is your receipt for papers turned in by email – save it!
