Policies & Procedures
Our infection Prevention & Control Policies are reviewed annually in April or if current advice
changes. These are accessible to staff via the CQC polices or Infection Control file in
reception. We have adopted the Policies set out by Southern Health Foundation Trust as a
guide to our procedures.
Risk Assessments
Regular risk assessments are undertaken to minimise the risk of infection and to ensure the
safety of patients & staff. The following risk assessments have taken place in the last year
and the appropriate actions taken.
1. Children's Toy's
2. Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
3. Clinical waste & sharps disposal
4. Isolation of contagious patients
5. Needle stick injury
6. Personal Protection Equipment
7. Surgery fixtures & fittings
8. Cleaning specifications for equipment
Toys, books & Magazines
We provide minimal toys to help entertain children whilst they are in the waiting however we
need to minimise the risk associated with these toys. We have removed all toys from the
consultation rooms. NHS Cleaning specifications recommend that all toys are inspected for
damage and cleaned regularly. In line with this we have allocated a member of
administration staff to be responsible for this task and to keep an audit log for inspection. We
would encourage parents to bring their own toys or books to entertain their children where
possible and we will put posters up to advertise this in the waiting room.

Modesty Curtains & Covers
The practice has implemented the use of disposable curtains which will changed
every 6 months as per practice policy. The use of modesty blankets has been
replaced by the use of disposable blue roll & disposable pillow cases are in use.
Cleaning Specifications & Cleanliness of Equipment
The Beggarwood Surgery retains the use of Elite Cleaning services who are responsible for
regular audits of the services they provide. The practice has adopted their cleaning policy in
all medical areas, fixtures and fittings and administration areas. Elite are responsible for
monthly cleaning audits and are required to supply the surgery with a copy of these
audits and an action plan as appropriate
The nursing staff are responsible for cleaning patient contact treatment areas &
equipment between patients. Protective equipment policies are in place along with
COSSH guidance on cleaning materials used. A daily schedule is kept for the
cleaning and checking of equipment
Patients
Patients who suspect they have an infection that maybe contagious such as Chicken
Pox will be asked to wait in a designated room rather than waiting in the main waiting
room.
All Patients requiring dressings who are known to have an infection such as MRSA
are treated at the end of the nurse list so that the room can be prepared before &
cleaned afterwards. The need for these precautions is shared with the individual
patients as part of their care plan. There have been no reported cases of MRSA in
the blood stream in the practice in the last year.
Patients are encouraged to use alcohol gel on entering & leaving the practice. These
are made available throughout the practice areas.
