Start event: KO
Planned Date: K0
End event: K+3
Planned Date: K0+3
Objectives:
 Provide critical analysis and consolidation of preliminary User Requirements (Annex 2) taken into
account needs of stakeholders, capacity of new remote sensing instruments and technologies,
and current knowledge on forest ecosystems’ structure
 Harmonize the major definitions and classification schemes to be used in the global and regional
products
 Develop a solid and consistent description of the RS products to be implemented during the
project life time
 Outline the prospective research needs for further developments of integrated methodologies
for remote sensing assessment of major ecological indicators of ecosystems (biomass, NPP etc.)
Inputs:
-
Statement of Work
Results of preliminary User Requirements (Annex 2)
Technical proposal of the Globbiomass project
Properties of existing and perspective RS instruments
Model Knowledge of research results on forest biomass structure in different biomes
Tasks:
o Provision of commonly accepted Glossary, Definition of Terms and Classification schemes
related to the objectives of the Project
o Systems analysis, harmonization, grouping and standardization of the requirements of the user
groups
o Specification of reliability and accuracy requirements
o Description of biomass estimation products to be developed
o Case-study for Russian forests on advanced future development of RS methodology of biomass
assessment (partitioning of biomass in components, assessment of NPP)
Outputs:
Results of the above tasks will be presented in Deliverables
- User Requirements Document
- Product Specification Document
- Perspective problems of future research on integrated biomass assessment
Planned effort in man-hours: 346
