Lesson- Reactionary sculpture from art collection at McNay Art Museum.
Be inspired by two different artists to create one original sculpture incorporating characteristics from each
artist.
Class periods- 4 for wet clay (3/26, 3/30, 4/1, 4/6)
3 for glaze (4/14, 4/16, 4/20)
Due Dates:
 April 6, 2015 Bone Dry- in kiln room
 April 20 Glaze- in kiln room
Requirements: No bigger than 8in by 8in, no smaller than 5in by 5in.
Grades:
 Minor Grade- Sketches of two master artists (name, date, media, time period).
 Minor Grade- Self Assessment, complete sentences.
 Assessment Grade- Pictures taken of sculpture progress every day. Labeled by day. (Day 1, Day 2 etc…)
 Assessment Grade- Bone Dry sculpture graded by rubric on April 6th.
 Assessment Grade- Glazed sculpture due April 20 at end of class. Place in kiln room.
Focus: Balance, Emphasis, Movement, Form, Color, Details
SCULPTING
Day 1 ( 90 minutes) March 26th
 Pick two artists. Use previous design to start planning and creating sculpture.
 Start sculpture on board wrapped in plastic. Remember the size requirements and clay rules for
thickness, trapped air, attaching etc... 25% finished ________Send picture
Day 2 ( 90 minutes) March 30th
 Work entire class period on construction of sculpture. Look up more ideas from artists. 50% finished

Day 3 ( 90 minutes) April 1
 Work entire period on details, textures, balance, emphasis, movement and clean up edges. 75%

Day 4 ( 90 minutes) April 6
 Work entire period on tiny details. Slip trailing, carving, finishing edges, fix the bottom, check
thicknesses. Finish fixing all of sculpture.
 PLACE IN KILN ROOM DUE 100% finished________Send picture
GLAZING
Day 1 ( 90 minutes) April 14th
 Look at artist and study their colors, textures and details. Research glaze design to match artists.
 Wax bottom. Start under glaze and overglaze background. 33% finished
Day 3 ( 90 minutes) April 16th
 Start to glaze details. Turn sculpture all directions to not miss any spots. Clean and crisp details,
textures. Focus on emphasis. 66% finished
Day 3 ( 90 minutes) April 20th
 Glaze tiny details. Clean up edges, add layers, clean up texture, outline emphasis and make sure
everything has three coats of glaze. PLACE IN KILN ROOM 100% finished________Send picture
