Why should I become a Jr. Counselor?

Being Jr. Counselor is one of the best summer opportunities after high school!

Opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of children

As a camp counselor you are able to walk along side children as they explore who they are and grow in their faith with God. Because you are older than the campers, but still close to them in age, they trust you and let you become part of their faith story. It’s really incredible.

For every counselor that works at UMM, 100 kids have the opportunity to attend camp or

VBS. Your impact will react far beyond just 100 kids, though. You will touch the lives of over

1,000 kids this summer by being part of UMM’s team. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others, Jr. Counseling allows you to do that.

Opportunity to Learn how to be a Camp Counselor

Jr. Counselors have the opportunity to learn how to and experience leading youth ages 1 st -

12 th grade while being guided by older and more experienced summer staff and leadership.

You will work mainly with elementary children, but may have other counseling opportunities with older children based on your leadership skills as they develop.

Opportunity to Help Transition into being a Post-High School Young Adult

This summer job helps you transition from being a high school student to a young adult preparing for further education and career opportunities.

You are surrounded by down-to-earth mature adults who will help you make the transition out of high school.

The experience is diverse and looks good as you apply for college internships and jobs.

Opportunity for more Leadership Positions in your Future

Jr. Counselor’s receive more coaching than Sr. Counselors over the course of the summer, which can help you have more summer leadership opportunities available to you at UMM or other camps in the future.

As you work throughout the summer and gain camp counseling skills you may have the opportunity to lead a cabin of campers by yourself in camp, if you show that you are ready to step into this leadership role. (This opportunity is available for 18 year old Jr. Counselors who demonstrate excellent leadership and camp counseling skills toward the end of the summer.)

Opportunities to Travel

As a Jr. Counselor you will gain most of your experience by leading VBS programs in communities around north western North Dakota and eastern Montana.

Flexible Schedule

UMM will work with your graduation schedule and orientation to college visits. We will collaborate together on when you will be able to complete your staff training and when you will be able to go on VBS trips and be in camp. Let us know when you need time off to get

ready for the fall. We will make a custom work schedule for you for the summer. While you are gone, other staff will prepare for your return and will update you on what has been happening at camp.

You will have June 30-July 6 off for the 4 th of July. You may also be off June 9-14, July 14-19,

 and/or Aug 4-9.

If you are interested in attending UMM as a camper, you may attend Power Week with friends July 7-12. Come and bring your friends.

What Can I expect as a Jr. Counselor?

Where will I sleep?

While at camp, you will stay in a cabin with campers and a Sr. Counselor. If you are 18, you may have the opportunity to stay in a cabin with your own campers toward the end of the summer. This opportunity may be offered if the Interim Program Director believes you are ready to independently counsel for a week and you would like to. Counselors only stay with campers of the same gender. Each camper and counselor will have their own bed.

While you are on VBS, you will stay in a host home provided by the VBS congregation with other staff members from your team. No staff member will stay in a host home by themselves. VBS teams will return to UMM Thursday night each week.

One the weekends, staff will be assigned to 1 male cabin and 2 female cabins. You may also return home on the weekends.

What about my meals?

UMM will provide all of your meals while you attend staff training and whenever you are counseling on site.

UMM will coordinate with VBS congregations to make sure that all meals will be provided for

UMM staff while on VBS. If you have any dietary restrictions, let us know so that we can prepare to accommodate you.

UMM is a peanut butter free environment.

UMM prepares a salad bar for each meal to help accommodate a variety of dietary needs.

What can I do on weekends?

UMM is a great place for summer staff to stay on the weekends. You have access to all of the fun activities that campers have during their stay. You can go swimming, canoeing and kayaking. You can go on hikes with friends or watch movies in the Retreat Center. We have laundry facilities available for you get ready for the next week. Meals will be on your own, but a microwave, fridge and other kitchen utensils will be available for use in the staff lounge. Wi-Fi will be available in the Retreat Center as well. One weekend we will plan to go visit camp counselors at Badlands Ministries and visit Medora, ND.

Lifelong friends are made while living in this Christian community on weekends.

You can also go home on the weekends. You will have from 5pm on Fridays through

Saturdays off. Weekends are your time to plan as you wish.

Who will I work with?

While on VBS, you will work with a team of counselors and one VBS Coordinator.

While in Camp, you will work with a Sr. Counselor of the same gender who will collaborate with you to jointly counsel a cabin of 10 kids. You will work with a team of counselors and three Leadership staff on site.

The Interim Program Director will schedule where you will be working from week to week based on who you work well with and what counseling styles are best for each group of campers.

What Makes Working at UMM Great?

Being able to get rid of all of the worldly attractions that ensues our lifestyles daily outside of camp, and replace them with the pure greatness of a God filled place. It's like fasting your mind of the ungodliness and super charging it with the godly where you end up leaving knowing you’re ready to take on the world and all its inconsistencies. -Nate Arneson

Knowing that you make a difference to people, not just kids, but their parents and communities. The community you build with the other staff. Learning about God in a place that you can see Him. Knowing that the campers can sometimes teach you more than you can teach them. -Emma Rose

The community you are surrounded by all summer and watching kids of all ages grow in their relationship with God and grow in Christ centered friendships. Also learning and growing in your own relationship with the Lord alongside the campers. -Jessica Brandt

The community of fellow Christians that you have the opportunity to grow with and worship the one true God with! -Jake Schauer
