“Cloud Book”

C ONSTRUCTIVE L EARNING , A DOPTION L EVEL , S CIENCE .

Lesson Objectives:

1.

Read a piece of literature on clouds with assistance- This objective was met when they read The Cloud Book, by Tomie de Paola.

2.

Read a science textbook for foundational information on the earth’s atmosphere-

This objective was met and utilized because they were able to draw a connection to The Cloud Book that they read and able to expand their knowledge of clouds and the atmosphere.

3.

Discuss atmospheric changes- This objective was met because after they read the science textbook they would know more about atmospheric changes and how this is related to clouds, they do this with the guidance of a teacher so they are able to get the correct information.

4.

Discuss clouds by cloud types and associated weather conditions- This relates to both books that they read, the objective is met when they are able to talk about how the atmospheric changes affect the types of clouds and the atmospheric changes affect the weather conditions and how all of this comes together. This is also done with the help and guidance of a teacher.

5.

Diagram information on clouds using graphic organizers- This objective is met when the students use Kidspiration to map out the parallels of different types of clouds and the relating atmospheric changes.

Technology:

1.

Kidspiration- Students are able to map out the information learned through the books and discussions so they are better able to see how these different aspects

of the weather relate to one another, they are also able to easily compare and contrast to have a better understanding of the overall lesson, and gives the teacher a chance to check to make sure they are grasping the connections.

2.

The Cloud Book, by Tomie de Paola- This tool was effectively used as the basis of the lesson. It gave the students a starting point to learn from so throughout the activity they could build on what they learned from this book. Ideally, before reading this book you should ask the children what they know about clouds already. To begin this lesson you could create a KWL chart with the whole class to help them focus on the important details of the book and to begin building there information as this knowledge will be used throughout the rest of the lesson.

Constructivist Principles: This lesson is geared towards constructivism in that it continues to build up previous knowledge in an attempt to connect the different pieces of content in the end. For example, the lesson starts out with learning and discussing clouds, then goes into learning about atmospheric changes, they you build on those pieces of knowledge to see how these atmospheric changes affects the weather and ultimately the types of clouds that we see. It also using technology in order to better engage the students and effectively support the lesson.

My Own Teaching: I really enjoyed connecting technology and the lesson with a book. I thought it was well planned out as it was able to grow and students were able to build on their knowledge throughout the course of the lesson. Kidspiration is an excellent tool for kids to use in order to help them express what they are thinking and to help them express the connections they made throughout the lesson. It also gives them a chance to physically write out what they learned in their own words in an attempt to get them to remember this information.
