Purpose:
Explore the reactions of metals with metal ions in solution.
Learn to recognize the signs of a chemical reaction
Learn to recognize the component parts of a chemical reaction
Procedure:
Part 1

Open the website above
Click Start Do not use the back button on the browser or you will have to start over
Click Start and use the magnifying glass to view each solution
Write the formula for the ions in solution and record the color of the solutions in Data Table
A on the data sheet provided. Note that some of the solutions are for activity 2.
Click Activity 1
Follow the directions to insert Mg into the solutions.
Remove the Mg from the solutions and record any changes in appearance (color, size,
texture) in Data Table 1
Repeat with the other metals and record your results in Data Table 1
Follow the same procedure as in Activity 1 in Activity 2 and record your observations in Data
Tables A and 2. Note that some of the metals and some of the solutions are different.
Leave the computer logged on and return to your seat with your data to discuss the results.
Part 2
1. Go to the home screen of the activity and restart Activity 1.
2. Click the Molecular Scale Reactions button and proceed to put one of the metals in one of
the solutions.
3. After viewing the animation, write a brief description of what you saw in Data Table 3. Be
sure to use appropriate chemistry terms.
4. Repeat until you have put each of the metals in each of the solutions.
5. Log off the computer and return to your seats with your data to discuss the results.
