The National University of Ireland, Galway, is seeking outstanding candidates for a Research
Fellow position in Reasoning and Querying. This position will be within the Digital Enterprise
Research Institute (DERI) www.deri.ie. The National University of Ireland, Galway is home to more
than 15,000 students across five Colleges with highly active agendas in teaching and research.
The University recently reaffirmed its research priorities and this placed Information and
Communications Technology as one of its leading priorities. The Digital Enterprise Research
Institute is a key focus of the ICT research at the university.
The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), Galway, Ireland was founded in 2003 following
the granting of funds under the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) CSET initiative (Centres for
Science, Engineering and Technology). DERI is dedicated to research aimed at enabling
Networked Knowledge using Semantic Web technologies. DERI is one of the leading research
institutes in the world in its domain and has attracted approximately €60 million in direct research
funding since 2003, together with significant industry involvement.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform a leading role in Digital Enterprise Research
Institute (DERI) and will lead the research within the Reasoning and Querying Unit.
Skills required:









A clear vision for the realisation of world-class research;
Postdoctoral expertise in applying formal methods and techniques that combine
probabilistic approaches and knowledge representation to a variety of concrete scenarios
including heterogeneous sensor-fusion for indoor localization and event detection, contextaware systems for home monitoring and health prevention, access-control policies in data
management;
An international reputation with a capacity to provide leadership in all the research activity
including query processing, logic programming, stream reasoning, optimization, privacy and
access control, lightweight reasoning for the web and for the enterprise;
Proven ability to compete successfully for national and international research funding;
Proven ability to lead a team of researchers and to supervise students, and to collaborate
with other research groups internationally and within an institution;
Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level and willingness to engage in
some teaching and tutorials for industry partners;
Demonstrated experience in collaborating with industry and strong commitment to future
industrial engagements;
Demonstrated experience in developing postgraduate curricula and in coordinating
postgraduate education programmes;
Excellent interpersonal communication and scientific writing skills;

Demonstrated experience in participating in organisation and programme committees,
including workshops, conferences and journals.
Salary: €58,991 per annum. (Public sector pay policy pertaining to new entrants will apply)
