COURSE OBJECTIVES
The aim of the course is to make students familiar with the most important terms of
sociolinguistics and with the basic methods of sociolinguistic analysis. The course is intended
to prepare students for the understanding of language functioning in the society.

LECTURES
Introducing basic terms: geographical and social dialect, accent, style, register
Language and social class. Phonetic lexical and grammatical features of chosen

sociolects.
Language and gender: grammatical gender, linguistic taboo, conversational styles
Langauge and ethnic group: identifying function of language, bi- and
multilingualism
Language and contact: pidgins and creoles
Linguistically conditioned language change
Diglossia, code-switching and code-mixing
Final test
