Legalize it…?

We studied the historical aspects of Prohibition. We saw the economic, political, and social costs and benefits of the Noble Experiment.

In 2012, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are legal. Is it time to legalize drugs, at least marijuana?

Points to ponder:

1.

With legalization, will drug use increase?

2.

Is the US “Winning” the war on drugs?

3.

Do the gains from drug prohibition outweigh the costs?

4.

Would you or your friends be more likely to use drugs if they were legal? Does the penalty or fear of getting caught stop you or your friends from using drugs? Consider cigarettes?

What you must do:

1.

Research the drug legalization argument.

2.

Analyze and evaluate competing claims for and against legalization.

3.

Using historical (prohibition) and contemporary arguments, create your own policy/position paper for Drugs in America.

 You must cite at least 3 sources in your paper for support.

4.

Participate in an in-class Drug legalization debate.
