SERVICE PERSON’S STORY/EULOGY:

Prepared by Emma Simpson

Stanley Albert Corbett Booth was born in 1883 in Armidale, New South Wales to parents Robert Coulter and Priscilla Jane Booth. He was one of four children, having three sisters whom one was named Ance

Adelaide Booth. Stanley Albert attended Leichhardt West Public School, where his father was headmaster.

Records state Booth had also matriculated for university entrance.

Prior to enlistment Stanley Booth married Alice Mills in 1902 and had two children - Alice Katherine Victoria

(born in 1903) and James Stanley Andrew (born sometime after 1905). Prior to enlistment, Booth’s occupation was a salesman (however he had two years of military experience as a field engineer for the

Citizen Forces) and his address was recorded as 25 Avenue Road in Mosman, Sydney. His religious denomination was Methodist.

On 25th September 1915 in Goulburn, New South Wales Stanley Albert Corbett Booth enlisted to serve the

Australian Imperial Force in World War 1. He was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 152 pounds with a dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He was assigned to the 8th Reinforcement in the 18th Battalion, ranked as a Private and given the service number of 3469.

Three months after Booth enlisted, on 20 December 1915, he embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A60

Aeneas. The troops arrived in Alexandria, Egypt where they committed to military training before proceeding to France on 25 March. Nine days before hand, on 16 March 1916 Booth was taken on strength and transferred to the 19th Battalion within the British Expeditionary Force.

From Alexandria, Booth and his battalion advanced to Marseilles, France on 20 March 1916 and arrived 7 days later on the 27th. The 5th Brigade, which was composed of the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th Battalions soon took part in its first major offence around Pozières, France between 23 July and 7 August 1916. This battle is now recognised as the Battle of Pozières in which its objectives were to defeat harsh German counter-attacks. Although this was successful, Australian forces had suffered 6848 casualties by 6 August, one of these being Private Booth.

On 28 July 1916 Stanley Albert Corbett Booth was killed in action at 32 years of age during the Battle of

Pozières in France. His name is currently commemorated on Panel 26 at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, on Panel 87 at the Australian War Memorial and in the Pioneers Memorial Park at Leichhardt in Sydney.

During his service, Private Booth also obtained the medals 1914-15 Star (for men who fought in war before

31 December 1916), the British War Medal (for army personnel who left their native shores in any part of the British Empire during service), and the Victory Medal (for those who entered any nature of war).
