WE are trying to get 100% participation from ALL 1st Graders!!
The 21 Day Challenge - Register NOW!
Students, Staff, and Others can Sign-up for Kids-Teaching-Kids 21 Day Challenge, which involves
making and eating healthy snacks beginning Monday, January 11, 2015. Allen ISD has challenged
Prosper ISD to recruit the most participants.
The actual Challenge will begin on Monday, January 25.

Please send a water bottle (with a sports cap, this will help avoid spills).
 First graders are allowed to have a healthy snack at 2:00. Please make sure the snack is easy to open
and does not require a spoon or fork. Due to various severe allergies within our classroom, peanuts or any foods
containing nuts will not be allowed. Thank you for your support and cooperation to keep all students safe!
This week:

Reading/ Social Studies – Students will make inferences about text and use textual
evidence to support understanding. In Social Studies we will read and learn about Martin Luther
King Jr. and how his movement established equal rights for African Americans.

Word Work: Students will be expected to spell words with the following 2 chunks: -ay (example
gray) and –ai (example mail).

Writing – We will continue our unit on opinion writing.

Math- 3D Figures: First grade mathematicians will identify three dimensional shapes and
describe them using geometric language.
Vocabulary: sphere, cube, edge, cone, three dimensional, vertices, cylinder, faces, surface,
rectangular prism, base, solid, triangular prism, vertex, attributes
 Science – Living and Nonliving: First grade scientists will sort and classify living and
nonliving things based upon whether or not they have basic needs and produce
offspring.

Science Vocabulary Focus: basic need, food, living, nonliving, offspring, shelter, water
Next Week:


Franklin and Alexander Graham Bell.


feet) and –ea (example seat).

Writing – We will continue our unit on opinion writing.

Math- Fractions: First grade mathematicians will identify equal and unequal parts using
examples and non-examples.
Vocabulary: fraction, whole, half, fourth, equal parts, quarters, fair share, half of, part, unequal
parts
 Science – Living and Nonliving: First grade scientists will continue the study of living
and Nonliving.

Science Vocabulary Focus: basic need, food, living, nonliving, offspring, shelter, water
