Career P.R.E.P. Program
Prepare ◊ Reach ◊ Emerge ◊ Propel
This program is designed for students after their first semester with less than 3 years of job search
experience as well as more experienced students interested in refreshing their skills. Each session will
give you tools and techniques to more effectively market yourself during the job search process. The
cohort model adds to your learning, and assignments are required. Sessions are in class and online.

*Special Note: The last session of Career P.R.E.P. will be held on Friday, December 7 th from 56:15pm followed by the Alumni Network Express.
SESSIONS
Session I: Self-Assessment You will use personality and skills inventories to help you understand and
articulate your values, interests, skills, and motivators. You will then use this information to think about
prospective career paths and environments. Tuesday, 9/11 5:00-5:50pm in L211/213.
Session II: Marketing Yourself You will learn how organizations are identifying prospective candidates,
and use this information to create powerful marketing-driven resumes, cover letters and elevator pitch
that are tailored to meet your audience’s needs. Tuesday, 9/18 5:00-5:50pm in L211/213.
*Note: As pre-work, please review the 12-minute “Elevator Pitch” module on Blackboard.
Session III: Networking for Success You will learn specific techniques to approach networking
opportunities with confidence, and get to know each other in this interactive session.

Session IV: Public Health Careers Fireside Chat Gain valuable insights from successful public health
practitioners representing diverse career paths. Find out what skills they say are absolutely necessary
(soft and hard), and use this knowledge to further hone your own interests.
Tuesday, 10/16 5:00-5:50pm in L110.
Session V: Interview Strategies Learn how to prepare for different interview types (phone screen,
panel, behavioral and case interviews). You will create “success stories”, and understand what
interviewers look for, including good questions from candidates.
Tuesday, 10/23 5:00-5:50pm in L211/213.
Session VI: LinkedIN Basics You will receive an introduction to LinkedIN including building your
profile and finding networks. We will also discuss strategies for protecting your online reputation and
etiquette for communicating via social media. Online.
Session VII: Public Health Recruiter Panel Gain insights from recruiters on what they are looking for
when reviewing resumes and cover letters, their tips for interview success, how they are using social
media and other networking forums, and finally, their advice on professional etiquette Do’s and Don’ts.

Session VIII: Evaluating and Negotiating Opportunities Understand the importance of connecting
job opportunities to your Self-Assessment. You will also learn valuable strategies and techniques to face
negotiating conversations with confidence. Tuesday, 12/4 5:00-5:50pm in L212/213.
Session IX: Mock Interviews with Alumni In this final session you will engage in practice interviews
and gain feedback from Alumni. This will be followed by our Alumni Network Express where you will enjoy
an evening of more networking with Alumni. Friday, 12/7 5:00-6:15pm in L211/213. Alumni
Network Express, 6:30-8:30pm in Hiebert Lounge.

Sept. 12, 13 and 14 - Ace the Case Workshop Series

Case interviews are common in the field of consulting and other management-oriented interviews. In this
series, you will gain an understanding of what is expected, ways to approach cases, and practice in a
group setting.
Sept. 20 - Fellowship Networking Event
Time: 4-5:45pm, Location: Hiebert Lounge, BU School of Medicine
Learn about post-graduate fellowship opportunities. These positions are designed to give graduates the
training they need to become future leaders. Organizations to be announced in early September.
Oct. 16 - Public Health Careers Fireside Chat
Time: 5-5:50pm, Location: BU School of Medicine, L110
Q&A with a panel of alumni representing diverse public health career paths.
Nov. 15 and 16- Kick Start Your Career Program

Get the inside track on job search do’s & don’ts. Recruiters will represent different public health sectors.
Dec 7 - Alumni Network Express

Join alumni and fellow students for an evening of learning, mingling and fun.
