PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Safety glasses or face shield must be worn at all
times in work areas.
Long and loose hair must be tied back
Appropriate footwear must be worn. Shoe must
be fully enclosed. No open toed shoes.
Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn.
Remove strings hanging from pullovers/sweaters.
Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets,
etc.) must not be worn.

SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
1. Don all personal protective equipment including: safety glasses, & protective nitrile gloves
(where required). Ensure all loose clothing is either removed or tied back. Remove any jewelry
and tie back long hair.
2. Fill two test tubes with 10ml of synthetic urine. To avoid stains, be careful when pouring the
synthetic urine.
3. Put one tube into a hot water bath and leave the other at room temperature.
4. After 3-4 minutes, remove the test tube from the hot water bath. To avoid burns, be careful
when removing the test tube by using a test tube holder.
5. Compare the heated and unheated urine samples and record your observations.
6. Use 10ml of the unheated urine and dip a piece of Universal Indicator paper into the urine and
remove quickly. Leave the paper for 30 seconds. Compare the colour to a pH chart and record
your observations.
7. In a test tube, combine 1ml of synthetic urine, 3ml of Benedict’s solution, and 3ml of distilled

water.
8. Heat the test tube in a hot water bath for 3 minutes. Use a test tube holder to remove the
test tube when finished.
9. Record your observations and clean up your station.
