Forthcoming Events Friday 22 May Marsden Whitby Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/marsdenwhitby To keep even more up to date with events and success relating to Marsden Whitby please Like our Facebook page! We have recently had some cash go missing around school so could I please remind parents that if money is coming into school it needs to be in a sealed named envelope together with the related permission slip. If students can bring the envelope to the School Office before going to Period 1 that would be very helpful. Also, could parents please ensure that all items of school uniform and equipment are clearly named with both first and surname. STUDENT SUCCESSES Isabelle Evans (Year 10) has been accepted into the New Zealand Secondary School Chorus. Congratulations! Congratulations also to our Premier Debating Team who won against St Pat’s Town this week. Marsden Whitby Premier A Debate Team debated St Pat's Town on the moot that "This house regrets the rise of online activism" with Marsden negating. It was a very interesting debate that questioned whether online activism is even activism or if it is just a bunch of people complaining behind a computer. The debate was close but ultimately the Marsden team won the debate! Bronte Page Jack Davies’ Marsden rocket continues to be notable across the world! Useful NCEA information for Students and Parents As we near the middle of the year it is timely for students and parents to refresh what we understand about how NCEA works, especially the requirements for University Entrance. Understanding NCEA is a booklet designed for use by students, parents, and the wider school community. It is designed to be a guide to understanding how NCEA works and the importance of having a plan, choosing subjects, career planning and aiming for endorsements. All students have a copy of this booklet, given to them either in year 10 or 11. It can also be viewed at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/about-us/publications/nzqabrochures/. It is the green booklet on the right. A recently updated digital resource is also available on the NZQA website http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualificationsstandards/qualifications/ncea/understanding-ncea/how-nceaworks/video/. The How NCEA works video is a popular animation that provides basic information about NCEA and is particularly useful as an initial overview for parents and students new to secondary school. To help clarify information about University Entrance (UE), NZQA have put details in one place on their website. By visiting http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/UE you can find out more about the minimum requirements, approved subjects, and background to the changes implemented in 2014. Last year NZQA introduced an App http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualificationsstandards/qualifications/ncea/understanding-ncea/mobile-app/ that also contains clear and succinct information about UE. The NCEA Guide App includes a link to the more detailed UE information on the website, as well as plenty of useful advice about NCEA itself. The app also contains information about how parents and whanau can support family members studying towards gaining their secondary school qualification. Friday 26 June Term 2 ends SPORTS Senior Netball No games in Kapi-Mana last weekend due to extreme weather, but both senior teams on court tomorrow! Marsden Blue play Tawa Lime at 9am and Marsden Red is versus Aotea Gold at 11am. Junior Netball Last Saturday, despite all other games being cancelled, the Year 7 and 8 netball matches went ahead. Marsden Whitby led the entire game against Pauatahanui Magic, with the final score resulting 8-6. Player of the Game went to Cassandra Mansfield (Year 7) for her brilliant shooting. This week’s game is at 9:55am vs TIS Black on Court 4. Football Marsden Whitby team plays Onslow 6 at Onslow, Ground 3 at 11 am this Saturday. You are welcome to come and support the team. Hockey After a shaky start to the season (1 loss, followed by 2 draws), The Tawa 2 plus the Marsden Bandits hockey team had a mind boggling, bonus point 5—0 win against Upper Hutt 2. Three members of the team were unavailable to play, so there were no reserves, and our fitness has been our downfall up until this point. With our skipper Aidan "The Machine" Drummond away on a field trip, it was Daniel "Dan the Man" Ford's turn to captain the side. He produced a dominating performance in centre half, setting up pretty much all of our goals, of which four were scored by the Tawa wingers (whose positioning by the goal was superb), and one by Tom "The Beast" Wiltshire, bringing his season total to 4, and three assists by me, Matthew "Rick" Bauman in the centre forward position. Team Spirit! Matthew Bauman This week the Tawa /Marsden Boys hockey team won 5-0 against Upper Hutt High Tom Wiltshire scored 1; Matthew Bauman scored 1. So far this team has lost one game, drawn two and won one. The Marsden players are playing key roles in this team with Aidan Drummond as Captain and Dan Ford Vice-Captain. The goal scorers so far this year are Aidan (2), Tom (2) and Matthew (2). The combined team is working very well with two coaches, one from Tawa and myself from Marsden. We have two managers, Bridget Bauman from Marsden and Kathy Wiltshire from Tawa. We get good parent support to all games which is great as it lifts the team.
