The University of Bremen, a mid-sized university with approximately 250 professorships and 19,000 students, offers a broad range of disciplines and competes internationally in top-level research. With an ambitious institutional strategy the university
was successful in the Excellence Initiative as one of eleven universities in Germany.
The University of Bremen is offering – conditional to the release of budgetary funds –
at the Faculty 9/Cultural Sciences the following position:
Junior Professorship (tenure track option)
(salary group W1, civil servant status limited for three years with a possible extension
of another three years and tenure track option)
for
Maritime Anthropology

The prospective candidate for the junior professorship holds a PhD in Social /
Cultural Anthropology and has solid ethnographic field experience within the thematic
area „Maritime Anthropology“. The new professorship is responsible for the discipline
„Maritime Anthropology“ in research and teaching. This encompasses a
comprehensive knowledge of the ethnography of maritime and coastal dwellers and
their ways of life, maritime /marine professional cultures and users of oceans and
seas - embedded in a solid foundation of ethnographic methods as well as own long
time field research preferable within a non-European region.
We expect demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following subfields:







Environmental Anthropology, Anthropology of Science, Technology,
Economy or Law with regard to oceans, seas and coasts
ecological economies of oceans, coasts, ports, and harbour cities
plural knowledges of oceans and seas
multispecies ethnography
the ocean as local and transcultural contact zone; aspects of globalisation
and transcultural processes associated with oceans and seas
maritime cultural heritage, tourism
mobility, migration and flight connected to the seas
It is expected that the candidate will partake in inter-/transdisciplinary research
activities with the Marine Sciences at Bremen University and actively develop
research cooperations with the Bremer museums connected to marine and maritime
issues. The junior professor will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in
cultural research and transcultural studies, including cultural theories, ethnographic
methods and more specific thematic modules. Teaching will take place in English
and German. Participation within the German – Turkish Double Degree Master
„Transcultural Communication“ is desired.
The requirements for appointment to a civil servant, an outstanding ability to conduct
academic research, an excellent Doctoral Degree, and further scientific
achievements are prerequisites for the position. Educational aptitude and
documented experience with teaching at University level are additional requirements.
It is furthermore expected that the applicant will actively contribute to the acquisition
of third party funds and larger joint research projects. The successful applicant
should also be willing to further educate herself / himself in pursuit of excellence in
higher education and teaching. Experience with multimedia learning and new formats
of research based teaching as well as sensibility towards gender asymmetries in
learning and teaching are desired.
Junior professors at Bremen University are offered an attractive career perspective
via the Tenure Track Program with only 4 hours teaching load per semester in their
first phase of service. The University intends to advertise the position as tenured
before the junior professorship concludes. Applicants whose PhD was not acquired
at Bremen University can then apply for tenure track. In exceptional cases, a
transition to tenure track without an open call is possible.
The University of Bremen intends to further increase the presence of women in
