Emergency response procedures for employees.
1. If the fire alarm sounds, stop what you are doing and shutdown all processing equipment following all emergency shutdown
procedures.
2. Evacuate the building following the posted routes or the safe exit designated by the Floor Warden
3. Meet outside at the emergency assembly point which is outside the main entrance, in the far north corner of the parking lot. If the
Chief Fire Warden deems this assembly point unsafe, a secondary site will be communicated to all.
4. Only attempt to put out a fire with a fire extinguisher if it is safe to do so (i.e. a small waste basket) and if you have been trained.
5. Assist persons with disabilities to exit the building.
6. Avoid smoke filled areas. If the room or evacuation route is filling with smoke, crouch down as you exit. Smoke rises, pushing
available oxygen to the floor.
7. Should your clothing catch on fire, STOP DROP and ROLL to smother flames.
8. If you are trapped during a fire: shout at regular intervals to alert Emergency Crews to your location. Find a window and place an
article of clothing outside as a marker for rescue crews.
9. Wait for the All Clear announcement from Emergency Response Team Members before re-entry into the building/area.

EVACUATION ACCOUNTABILITY
 The Chief Fire Warden and/or Deputy Chief Fire Warden will check the alarm panel (identified by WHITE hat) located in
vestibule of main entrance) to identify the location, nature of the alarm.
 The Chief Fire Warden will back up the Floor Wardens as required. However, good communication between floor wardens
and deputy floor wardens should minimize the need for this.
 All Floor Wardens and/or Deputy Floor Wardens (identified by RED hat if the hat is available) will perform an evacuation
sweep of their designated areas. Floor wardens must be cognizant of the areas they are checking and to avoid any areas where
they see or smell smoke.
 Area 1 Floor Warden is responsible for calling 911. Ensure to mention the official entrance is off 113 St. via 60 Ave.
 Area 1 Floor Warden is responsible for taking out the Sign in Binder and the BTD staff white board. Designated monitor will
ensure any special needs persons get out safely. Floor Wardens must shut all doors after clearing areas. Any locked doors are
assumed unoccupied. Knock and move on. Ensure a clear route for fire apparatus and response personnel.
 Do not get into your vehicle and drive away unless authorized to do so by your Floor Warden.
 The Chief Fire Warden will begin roll call once all floor wardens have completed their sweeps. After the emergency situation,
the Chief Fire Warden or Fire Marshall must give the “all clear” prior to anyone re-entering the building.

Tornado
WORKPLACE EMERGENCY REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
CALL 911 IF YOU SPOT A TORNADO
DO NOT PULL FIRE ALARM.
Tornadoes develop from severe thunderstorms in warm, moist, unstable air along and ahead of cold fronts. Such thunderstorms also
may generate large hail, damaging winds and lightening.
Watch for tornado danger signs. Tornadoes may happen so quickly warnings can't be issued in advance. Pay attention to weather
clues around you that may warn of imminent danger.
Receptionists will be the Tornado Watch and use radio and Environment Canada as resources.







Wall cloud, an isolated lowering of the base of a thunderstorm. The wall cloud is particularly suspected if it is rotating.
Dark, often greenish sky. Sometimes one or more of the clouds turns greenish ( a phenomenon caused by hail) indicating a
tornado may develop.
Large hail. Tornadoes are spawned from powerful thunderstorms and the most powerful thunderstorms produce large hail.
Tornadoes frequently emerge from near the hail-producing portion of the storm.
Cloud of debris. An approaching cloud of debris can mark the location of a tornado even if a funnel is not visible.
Funnel cloud. A visible rotating extension of the cloud base is a sign that a tornado may develop.
Roaring noise. The high winds of a tornado can cause a roar that is often compared with the sound of a freight train.
Tornadoes may occur near the trailing edge of a thunderstorm and be quite visible. It is not uncommon to see clear, sunlit
skies behind a tornado. They may also be embedded in rain and not visible at all.
Tornado Procedure :
1. If you spot tornado danger sign(s), or Environment Canada has issued a Tornado Warning in the Agri-Food Discovery Place
area, report to receptionist immediately
The receptionists will be the Tornado Watch; they will listen to the radio and watch Environment Canada’s website for
updated information.
2. If an evacuation has been deemed necessary by the Tornado watch and the Chief Fire Warden, they will notify Wardens of
each area by phone.
3. Each warden will do a sweep of his/her area to ensure everyone is aware that the tornado emergency response plan has been
initiated and that everyone needs to be moving toward the main washroom corridor, the safest spot in the building.
