Students take a grammar test.

Students discuss the meaning of the term “symbolism” as a class.

Students work in pairs to create their own examples of symbols.

On their own, students come up with their own definition of the word “symbolism”, make their own examples, and create a visual representation of their example.

5.

Students write a paragraph explanation of what the passport in “Passport” symbolizes, using textual evidence as support.

Thursday Sept. 27/ Friday Sept. 28

Literature lesson: a.

Students read “A Voice” by Pat Mora out of the literature book b.

Students discuss the meaning of the poem c.

On their own, students choose a symbol from the poem (the house, the flatbed truck, meat, potatoes, and gravy, or America). Students create a visual representation of the symbol, and write an explanation for the symbol’s meaning, using textual evidence for support.

Monday Oct. 1/ Tuesday Oct. 2

Warm-up: define symbolism and give an example.

2.

Vocab lesson: a.

New words are introduced. Teacher gives examples of meaningful sentences. b.

Students complete vocab assignment in class

(put each definition into their own words and create a meaningful sentence)

Literature Lesson: a.

Students read first myth out of Heroes, Gods, and Monsters

b.

Students get in groups of four. Each group is assigned one symbol from the myth. Groups must determine what their symbol represents, and come up with textual evidence to back up their argument. c.

Groups present their conclusions to the class. d.

Individually, students must choose a symbol from another group to write about. Each student writes a paragraph explaining what their symbol represents, using textual evidence as support.

Wednesday Oct. 3/Thursday Oct. 4

1.

Warm-up: If you had to choose an object to symbolize your best friend, what would you choose? Explain your answer.

2.

Grammar lesson: a.

Students discuss and define “adverb.” b.

Students complete page from writing coach as a class.

3.

Literature lesson: a.

Students read second myth from Heroes, Gods, and Monsters b.

Students choose a character from the myth, and discuss other characters from popular culture they are reminded of. (have examples ready for prompting.) c.

Students take notes over archetypes

Friday Oct. 5/ Tuesday Oct. 9

1.

Warm-up: Define archetype and give an example.

2.

Grammar lesson: a.

Students identify adverbs in sentences. b.

Students complete WC page.

3.

Literature Lesson: a.

As a class, students read “Theseus” from Heroes, Gods, and Monsters b.

In groups of three, students choose a character to focus on. Using their archetype notes, groups decide which archetype their character is. c.

Each group must fill up one large notecard with evidence to support their claim. d.

Each group presents their argument to the class for review. e.

Exit slip: Students come up with a character they know from popular culture, and explain what archetype that character is, with evidence to support.

Wednesday Oct. 10/Thursday Oct. 11

1.

Vocab quiz/ new vocab assignment in class

Literature Lesson: Write your Own Myth a.

Discuss/ take notes over quest archetypes b.

Students are assigned the Write Your Own Myth assignment

Students must create a story which follows the quest archetype structure

Stories must contain at least two recognizable character archetypes

Stories must follow narrative structure

Stories must be at least one page long

Stories will be graded on spelling, grammar, and punctuation c.

Students begin by brainstorming ideas (concept maps will be used) and going over the narrative structure (beginning, rising action, falling action, climax, falling action, resolution).

Students refer back to Theseus for these steps.

Friday Oct. 12/ Monday Oct. 15

1.

Grammar Lesson: a.

Students locate nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in sentences. (madlibs?)

Literature Lesson: Create your own myth a.

Students write their myths b.

Myths will be due by the end of class next time

Each student chooses a character from X-2 to focus on. b.

Each student makes a poster with a visual representation of their character c.

Each poster must include;

A picture of the character

The name of the character’s archetype

Description of archetype

At least three character traits with examples that prove that the character is the archetype

Friday Oct. 26/ Monday Oct. 29

Students finish their archetype posters, hang in the hall b.

Students complete gallery walk c.

Exit Slip: students choose one character they saw in the gallery walk (not their own) and compare him or her with another character they know from popular culture. Defend what archetype these characters are.

Tuesday Oct. 30/ Wednesday Oct. 31

Literature lesson: X-2 Paragraph (daily grade) a.

Students discuss the steps for constructing a literary argument b.

Going step-by-step, students compose a good paragraph following up on their X-2 poster project—they must defend their character’s archetype.
