Annual Assessment Report for Business, AY 2013/14
Our Annual Assessment Report for the College of Business (COB) differs from past reports because of
steps we are taking as a college to seek accreditation under the Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business (AASCB). We are no longer guided only by program review and annual
assessement requirements of the campus; we must now also meet the assessment requirements of
AACSB.
In our initial steps toward AASCB accreditation, we found that it was critical for us to first draft the
COB Five Year Strategic and Academic Plan. To meet this need in a thoughtful and systematic way,
the 2013/14 Assessment Plan originally submitted to the Assessment Committee had to be altered as
the year progressed. For example, as part of developing the Strategic and Academic Plan it was
necessary to redefine the COB vision; mission; and strategic direction, foci, and priorities. With those
pieces in place, we then embarked on drafting Program Goals and revising our Major Learning
Outcomes (MLOs) and General Learning Outcomes (GKOs). We also invested in faculty training to
build a knowledge base of how CSUMB assessment requirements differ from and integrate with those
of the AACSB. It is important to note that a foundation piece of the COB Strategic and Academic Plan
is to build a culture of Assurance of Learning (AoL) across the college.
As a key learning, we realized we were far too ambitious in our Assessment Plan submitted Fall 2013
regarding what we could achieve during year. As a result, Pat Tinsley McGill is working this summer
to draft the framework for a multi-year AoL and assessment plan for review by COB faulty in Fall
2014.

Background
In Fall 2013, the department (School of Business) “morphed” into a college (the College
of Business, or COB). During the fall planning retreat, the full-time faculty recognized
that change to a College would require significant effort; this led the faculty to establish
three parameters for assessment this year (AY 2013/14):
--Assessment must be “time-bound” within the context of the significant adjustments
required to create a College with a new dean and seven full-time faculty members who are
already overstretched with commitments.
--The Assessment Plan established in the Program Improvement Plan would require
significant modification to align with the expectations of the Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business (AASCB) in the area of assessment. One major goal of
the College of Business is to become accredited within five to six years.
--Faculty leadership is required to create the COB Five-year Assessment Plan. During
Fall 2013, Babita Gupta agreed to lead the College of Business as the Director of AACSB
Accreditation and Pat Tinsley McGill agreed to serve as COB's Faculty Lead for
Assurance of Learning and Assessment. She is also continuing in the role of Faculty
Associate for Assessment for COB.
These three parameters were followed through the academic year. Overall, the assessment
efforts for the College of Business were ambitious. As shown below, development of the
multi-year assessment plan has turned out to be a multi-semester initiative for the new
college.
The College of Business continues to re-frame its Assessment direction, integrating the
CSUMB assessment requirements with those of AACSB. The completion status for the
deliverables established in Fall 2013 is now added to the COB Assessment Plan chart,
