Women’s Resource Center: The Women’s Resource Center was founded in 1979, and is located at the corner of Lincoln
Highway and Normal Road. The Women’s Resource Center reports through the Diversity and Equity Community of Practice,
within the Division of Student Affairs, along with the LGBT Resource Center, the Asian American Center, and the Latino
Resource Center.
Department Mission: The Women's Resource Center staff is dedicated to gender equity and enhancement of the campus
climate for women through advocacy, personal development, and social justice programming. We provide a central space on
campus where faculty, staff, students, and community can come together around issues of inclusiveness and activism.
Student Affairs Mission: In alliance with the educational mission of Northern Illinois University, the Division of Student
Affairs creates student learning opportunities beyond the classroom that inspire intellectual, personal, and civic growth for
leadership in a diverse and complex world.
The Position: The Graduate Assistant will report to the Victim Advocacy Coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center.
Women’s Resource Center Graduate Assistants are responsible for significant programming responsibilities, for helping
promote the Department of Justice Grant—NIU Coordinated Community Response Project FY 2010/2011 and its projects,
as well as helping to shape the direction of the office of the Victim Advocacy Coordinator. Specifically this position will be
responsible for scheduling trainings, assisting with presentations and trainings across campus, and providing technical support
for the project’s website and its development.
Responsibilities: Below is a non-exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities of the WRC Graduate Assistant:
 Planning/Implementation: Develop several small and larger-scale social justice events for women students,
faculty/staff and community members each semester.
 Collaboration: Work with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs to provide a diverse array of
events and programs for Women’s Resource Center constituents. Represent the WRC at Divisional events and other
departmental functions, such as tabling events, as needed.
 Financial Management: Responsible for budgeting for WRC programs and events, as well as assisting undergraduate
students in doing the same.
 Public Speaking: Responsible for completing presentations on gender issues to other Divisional departments,
Community Assistants in the Residence Halls and outside groups, as needed. May be required to facilitate discussions
or lead workshop sessions, as needed.
 Program Evaluation: Responsible for creating assessment tools for WRC events and programs, and measuring
effectiveness of programming efforts. Responsible for modifying programs, based on assessment outcomes.
 Supervision: May be responsible for supervision of interns and/or volunteer teams, as needed to assist full-time staff.
 Crisis Management: Responsible for handling crisis situations, as they arise, including individuals who may report
sexual assault and/or situations of interpersonal violence to the WRC. Must be able to respond in a positive,
supportive, non-judgmental way in order to meet the needs of the student seeking assistance.
 Research: Research or benchmarking may be required on specific aspects of Women’s Center programming.
Requirements:
 Admitted to NIU’s graduate school and enrolled in a graduate course of study.
 Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing a degree in Counseling, Adult and Higher Education, but those
pursuing a closely related field or discipline at Northern Illinois University will be considered.
 Academic background in or experience with women’s issues or programming.
 Must be an assertive communicator, willing to join a fast-paced but close-knit team of staff members
Qualifications:
 Experience working with students of diverse educational, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
 Excellent written and oral communication skills
 Superb organizational skills and high initiative level
 Demonstrated leadership ability
 Computer proficiency; preference given to candidates with web-site management and desktop publication experience
Salary/Compensation for a 5 month, 15 hours per week position include:

Start Date: April 1

Salary: $750 per month
