Pre-AP Biology 1 Genetics Disorder Research Project
Assigned: October 28, 2013
Due Date: November 4, 2013
Grade Value: Test Grade
NO LATE WORK on PROJECTS! NO MAKE-UPS on PROJECTS!
Directions: You will research a specific genetic or chromosomal disease or disorder. In your research, you will
answer each of the questions below. You will then create a display of your research using Microsoft Office
Publisher Brochures or Newsletters or using the directions for preparing a Tri-Fold Brochure. The rubric for
grading this project is found below.
Questions for Research:
1. Name of Disease or Disorder:
2. Chromosome(s) involved and gene locus if known:
3. Identify the type of Genetic mutation that causes the disorder
a. Specify if disease or disorder is caused by a single gene or if it is polygenic
b. For genetic diseases 1) dominant or recessive
2) autosomal or sex-linked
3) specifics of mutation
c. For chromosomal diseases –
1) monosomy, trisomy, or other chromosomal aberration
2) specifics of mutation – deletion, inversion, translocation, etc.
4. Symptoms of Disease or Disorder (external and internal symptoms)
5. Treatment and Diagnosis of Disease or Disorder
Also, Specify if genetic testing is available
6. Recent or Current Research about the Disease or Disorder/ New Therapies being researched? Are the
treatments controversial?
7. History of Disease or Disorder
8. What will happen to the person with this mutation (do they die shortly after birth, have mental
delays, die during a particular time frame, have a normal life, do they have a handicap?)
9. Information about Support Groups for Individuals or Families of Individuals with Disease or Disorder
10. Special or Unique Information About the Disease or Disorder

Please be creative and colorful. A hard copy of your project must be submitted for grading. Keep in mind
that students do not have access to color printers or copiers at school. Remember that your topic is a serious
topic and should be approached with consideration for those suffering from the disease or disorder and for
their families. Your goal is to be informative. Write in such a way that other students will understand
what you are saying.
***YOU MUST INCLUDE A BIBLIOGRAPHY (References) (GOOGLE DOES NOT COUNT AS A WEBSITE!!!)
BE SPECIFIC, SO THAT I CAN LOOK ON THAT WEBSITE TO VERIFY YOUR DATA
***DO NOT PLAGIARAIZE. I know how high school students write and how researchers write. It is VERY
different. Put it in your own words. You will receive a score of ZERO if any portion is plagiarized. I will
question all words that you use, so be sure to sound like yourself. If you think it is plagiarizing, then rewrite
it.
