Unit A Performance Assessment

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is being described as the next revolution in science.

Developing materials at the atomic scale are being used for the delivery of drugs, for construction of molecules, for application or coatings, and even for cleaning up toxic waste.

As a recruiter for a nanotechnology institute you are to come up with a presentation, set of posters and pamphlets, a video or an audio recording, to show

Chemistry 20 students how what they are learning now is relevant to

Nanotechnology. Your hope is to make such an impact that these students not only go into the field of nanotechnology, but they also come to your institution. Your product should include; knowledge of atomic structure, knowledge of chemical bonding (intramolecular bonds), knowledge of bonding forces (intermolecular bonds) and should be in depth regarding a particular type of nanotechnology. Your presentation may also involve a description of the tools used in nanotechnology, the design of chemical systems at the nano-level, or an explanation of how a discovery using nanotechnology works.

Required Components:

• the structure of the atom

• chemical bonding (intramolecular bonds)

• bonding forces (intermolecular bonds)

Assessment Components:

The student produces a clear and unambiguous answer (5 marks, see rubric)

Appropriate scientific conventions are used, such as units, significant digits, and states (up to 2 bonus marks, no marks over 100%).

The response demonstrates good organizational skills and is presented in a logical manner (5 marks).

The response demonstrates effective choice and use of media for presentation

(5 marks for suitability to content and to audience).
