Questions:
1. Are there places where you see volcanoes and earthquakes side by side? Where?
(example: along the eastern coast of Eurasia)
2.
Are there places where you see JUST volcanoes? Where? (example: off the east
coast of Africa)
3.
Are there places where you see JUST earthquakes? Where? (example: in the
Middle East)
Based on your answers for questions 1-3, please answer the following questions:
4.
If the locations of earthquakes and volcanoes show the edges of the tectonic
plates, do you think plates are moving in the same way at all locations? Why do
you think this?
5.
The western edge of North and South Americas is a subduction zone (one plate
sliding underneath another). What tectonic features do you see there
(earthquakes, volcanoes, or both)?
6.
Where is another subduction zone on the map? Where?
7. The San Andreas Fault is a transform fault (plates sliding past each other).
What tectonic feature do you see there? Do you see another transform fault on
the map? Where?
8. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (a ridge in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean) is a
divergent boundary (plates pulling apart from each other). What tectonic
feature do you see there?
9. What island in the North Atlantic Ocean is on this divergent boundary? (hint:
you will need to look on a world map)
10. There was a massive earthquake on the island of Haiti a few years ago that killed
thousands of people. What sort of plate boundary is this island on? (Hint: you
will need to look at this map and a world map to figure this out).
