2016 Pacific Artist in Residence
Creative New Zealand and the Macmillan Brown Centre for
Pacific Studies invite applications from traditional or contemporary
Pacific Artists in the fields of textiles, ceramics, painting,
sculpture and the literary and performing arts to apply for the
Creative New Zealand/Macmillan Brown Pacific Artist in residence
award.
The Creative New Zealand/Macmillan Brown Pacific Artist in residence programme
was established in 1996 and aims to provide Artists with an opportunity to
develop new directions in their Artistic practice. The programme aims to
support and promote the development of indigenous Pacific art in New Zealand.

Conditions of Award
1. The Award is tenable for a period of u p t o three months, to provide the
recipient with the opportunity to develop their art and creativity in an
academic environment.
2. It is expected that the Artist will take up the scholarship in 2016 during
the university's normal teaching year (late February to early November). The
actual starting date will be negotiated with the Macmillan Brown Centre for
Pacific Studies.
3. The size of the grant is $18,000 for u p t o a three month period. The
recipient will need to meet any costs of writing/artistic materials from their
award.
4. Awards not taken up in the year of the award will lapse.
5. Applicants should be New Zealand based Pacific artists of proven merit.
There is no restriction on the occupation of applicants, but an award will not
be made to a full time university staff member for work in a specialist
academic field.
6. The Artist will be required to reside in Christchurch for the duration of the
scholarship. It may be possible to split the position, ie. Two months in
residence, then the third month after a break (for cause).
7 The Artist in Residence will be required to be in residence in their work
space during their residency. The Artist-in- Residence will have the use of a
basic studio/office to be determined by the Macmillan Brown Centre for
Pacific Studies and will have access to university facilities such as the
Macmillan Brown Library and the UC Libraries and e-mail access. Other
working/performance space may be negotiated depending on the type of work
undertaken.
8 The Artist is expected to contribute to the Macmillan Brown Seminar series
and other activities of the Centre, including its community activities, or to
other assignments as may be determined by the Macmillan Brown Centre for
Pacific Studies.
9 Recipients of awards cannot hold other awards during the period of their
residency with the Centre.
10 On completion of the Artists’ term of residence, the appointee will be
expected to provide a report to the Macmillan Brown Centre, summarising
the importance of the residency to them in terms of what they have
managed to accomplish.
11 Artists are required to lodge appropriate documentation (copies of notes,
photocopies etc) of their works during their tenure.
12 As a gesture of good will, artists are encouraged to donate in the form of original
art or archival material to the Macmillan Brown Library collections to be used for
future
research
and
display
on
campus.

Travel Arrangements
1. The Centre can arrange return air travel via the most economical
route available. Travel costs will be deducted from the award.
Financial Payments
1. Scholarships are paid on a monthly basis in accordance with
University regulations. Artists for whom travel costs are paid will
receive the balance of their scholarship in monthly installments. The
final installment is paid only after receipt of the final report.
2. The Centre reserves the right to change the amount of the award of
the scholarship if for any reason the circumstances or time of the
residence is altered by the artist.
3. Grants paid may be considered as part of your income in a financial
year and therefore subject to tax. It is up to you to determine your
own situation and we suggest you consult your financial adviser or
refer to the Inland Revenue Department.

Application Procedures
Applications will be accepted in hard copy and electronic format.
Applicants must submit the following by 29 February
2016
1. Curriculum Vitae;
2. Completed application form (see attached),
including names of your references
3. Three letters of support/references from
recognised experts familiar with the applicant’s
work, these are to be sent directly to the
Macmillan Brown Centre for
Pacific Studies by 29
February 2016.
4. Please make sure all material associated with
your application is unbound (i.e do not bind your
application as we photocopy all the relevant
material).
5. Please advise if you would like us to return any
supporting material that you provide with your
application.
