Dear Parents and Students –
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! We are off to a great start to 2016 here at Handley School. We have spent some time
getting back into a routine and have been busy learning. The students and teachers will be setting goals for great
accomplishments as we enter the 3rd grading period and start the 2nd half of the school year. This semester will be
busy as we will participate in a variety of standardized tests: Study Island Assessments (K-2), ISTEP+ (3rd-5th)
IREAD3 (3rd), and STAR testing (1st-5th). Attendance will be crucial as teachers are working with students to
ensure students are prepared. Please be aware that cold weather is upon us. Weather delays can be checked at the
following website http://www.lpcsc.k12.in.us/ as well as on the radio at 96.7. Be sure your child is coming to
school with a hat, gloves, boots, and a coat. You may want to send a sweatshirt that can be kept at school in case
he/she becomes chilly in the classroom. If you need assistance with winter gear, please contact the school. We look
forward to a great 2nd semester. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

PARENT TIP: Eat meals together
You may have heard that it’s important for families to eat dinner together. But, other meals
are important, too. If you work evenings, maybe you could make time for a family breakfast.
On a weekend, try a picnic lunch! This is a great time to discuss manners and proper table
behaviors. Also, research indicates that children who frequently eat meals with their family
tend to do better in school and avoid risky behavior.
GOOD LUCK TO OUR GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS!! The girls’ basketball program gets underway
next week. The schedule is listed below. Please note that all of our games are “away” due to our gym not
having seating available. Come out and support the girls!!

PERFECT ATTENDANCE
Research shows that good attendance is important in order for students to be successful. When a student is not
in class, even if he/she “makes up” the work, there is a negative impact on learning. The teacher uses examples and
models processes/strategies that benefit students and can’t be duplicated with just paper and pencil. Below is a list
of students that were present EVERY DAY during the 2nd grading period. Way to go!!!
Handley School is once again participating in an Attendance Incentive Program. Every child with perfect
attendance (bell to bell) for the entire week will earn a ticket that is entered in a drawing at the end of the grading
period. Each child with perfect attendance for the grading period will receive a tag for their Handley necklace. At
the end of the nine week grading period, two names are drawn for a grand prize. Those children win a $25 gift card
to Karah Tess Sporting Goods. Congratulations to the winners for the 2nd grading period: Quintin Moore &
McKenna Langager. Every week with perfect attendance means another chance to win!!
IMPORTANT!! Any child with perfect attendance (bell to bell) all year long,
will earn a celebration limo ride.
