Format for Manuscript Writing (Monograph/Textbook)
(One – 01 hard copy to be submitted).
The following is a formal descriptive format for teachers aspiring for guidelines. An
experienced writer may adopt another format, provided it fulfills all the basic demands of
formal book writing. The Manuscript should be arranged in the following order:
2.5.1 Preliminary Pages
i. Title Page:
The title page must carry a complete title of the monograph or textbook, the full name of
author/s the name of the department, faculty and year. This should not bear page number.
ii. Dedication:
The author/s, should it be desired, may dedicate the work to institution or person
(optional)
iii. Table of Contents:
This must contain an elaborate list of contents for convenience of readers indicating
the page number of each title appearing, in sequence, as it appears in the text.
These must be arranged in their numerical order indicating the text page.
iv- List of Illustrations (figures):
All figures should be listed in alphabetical order.
v. List of Tables:
The list of tables used in proposed book should be made.
vi. List of Abbreviations:
Special abbreviations, specifically used in the text, may be arranged alphabetically with
explanation after the contents.
vii. Preface:
This section explains the author’s experience for writing book, how he intended to
write a book on specified subject/topic.
viii. Acknowledgement:
A word of thanks to the people who provided support to author in achieving such
milestone of book production.
2.5.2 Main text:
The main text may contain these sections and in the following order:
i. Introduction:
Introducing the problem and spelling out the main objectives and hypothesis.
ii. Text:
Review of Literature, Material and Method, Result and Discussion:
Together these would from the main body as the text.
iii. Selected Bibliography / Literature cited:
All the references cited in the text and notes should appear in this section. These
should be arranged in alphabetical order to the last name of the author.
iv. Annexes:
This section may contain supporting data for the text in the form of one or more annexes.
v. Glossary:
This is necessary requirement for a quality production of monograph/textbook.
vi. List of Index entries:
In order to standardize monographs / textbooks at par with the international market, this a
necessary requirement.
2.6 Composition and Layout of Manuscript
2.6.1 Composition of Pages
The range of pages of a monograph should not exceed 250 and should be within
range of 150-250. The pages of the textbook should not exceed 350 and should be
within range of 250-350. Indenting space of first line of each paragraph is 0.5”.
2.6.2 Fonts, Headings and Digital Numbers
i. Fonts:
All headings, except those beyond the fifth level should appear in bold letters and in Font
10, except for the chapter heading appearing in font 18.
ii. Headings:
The first level headings should all be in bold capital as: ‘INTRODUCTION’
The second level headings should be in small (Title Case/Sentence Case) bold letters
with the first letter of each main word a capital as: ‘Introduction to the Art of
Speaking’. The third level heading should have only the letter of the first word a
capital as: ‘Introduction to the art of speaking’. The fourth level headings may appear
in the text like the third level headings as: ‘Introduction to the art of speaking’.
iii. Digital Numbers:
All the headings should be assigned digital numbers as in the example under:

2.6.3 Tables and Drawings:
These must keep to the size of the text and adjusted within the printing area. Long
tables containing raw data should normally be inserted in an annex at the end of the
manuscript.
2.7 Submission of Manuscript:
These are to be made in the following 3 categories:
2.7.1 CD / DVD
The composed text of the manuscript along with tables, drawings and figures in the
CD / DVD (two copies).
2.7.2 Printout of Manuscript.
In addition to the above, three (01) copy of complete printouts of the manuscript
included with tables, drawings and figures (if any) be made in spiral binding.
2.7.3 Drawings, Figures and tables.
If in case the CD ROM does not include drawings, figures or tables then separate
laser printouts of these may be submitted on tracing paper.
2.8: Following are the general queries by authors and their kind consideration and
forwarding:
2.8.1. What will be the exact margins in Microsoft word? i.e. TOP,BOTTOM, LEFT and
RIGHT
Ans: Margins; Top=1.7 inches, Bottom=1.7 inches, Left=1.5 inches, Right=1.5 inches (Paper
Size = Letter Size) with page no (folio).
2.8.2. What font sizes to use for: Headings, Sub-headings and material?
Ans:
Font=Arial, Sizes; For Chapter No/Names=18 (Bold), Introduction=12 (Bold), Main
Headings=12 (Bold) Sub-Heading=10 (Bold) and for body (Matter)=10.
2.8.3. What will be the font-style?
Ans: Style; For Main heading=All Caps, Sub-heading (1.1)= Title Case, for 3rd Level (1.1.1)=Title
Case, for 4th level (1.1.1.1) = First cap.
2.8.4. What should be the space between the paragraphs?
Ans: Space between Paragraphs; 6x6 points.
