ELD Classroom Best Practices
Goal Statement: To provide best first instruction to ELL students so they become proficient English
communicators, which will allow them to access general education content with their peers.
As an ELD Teacher I will strive to:
1. Establish the language objective and ensure students understand the objective
throughout the lesson.
2. Incorporate the 50/50 rule.
3. Push students to their productive discomfort level.
4. Encourage students to respond in complete sentences.
5. Remember the teacher does nothing students can do themselves.
6. Encourage the students to answer Bloom’s higher level questions.
7. Align the learners’ evidence to the objectives.
8. Develop a Grammar Wall that will display science and social studies words that
are current with lesson plans.
9. Incorporate SEI Methodologies into lessons (Phonology, Lexicon, Morphology,
Semantics, and Syntax).
10. Integrate science and/or social studies content in my lessons.
11. Plan ELD subjects cohesively (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary,
Listening/Speaking and Verb Tenses).
12. Ensure my plans and teaching reflect the 4-hour block time allocations (40 min.
Reading, 40 min. RTI Reading, 40 min. Grammar, 60 min. Writing, 60 min.
Listening Speaking/Vocabulary)
13. Include English only materials in my whole group instruction.
14. Encompass, The Painless, Plan-Less Grammar Guide Book by Janelle Cameron &
Kevin Clark during the grammar block.
15. Provide when needed the Word to Word Translation Dictionaries.
