OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To generate income for, and promote, AIUK by managing the Cambridge branch of Books
for Amnesty. The Cambridge shop is one of seven second hand bookshops run by AIUK.
The Book Shop Manager must ensure that the Cambridge shop maximises income,
promotes a positive image of AIUK, and operates within appropriate financial and other
controls. This role will coordinate the work of a team of volunteers. The Book Shop Manager
will be responsible for Internet sales. This post also has responsibility for the evaluation and
sale of collectable books.
MAIN TASKS:
1. Working closely with the Retail Manager, to develop and deliver a strategic plan for
the Cambridge shop.
2. To be responsible for the effective functioning of Books for Amnesty Cambridge,
monitoring and reporting regularly on performance.
3. Working with the Retail, Manager to set the annual income and expenditure budget
and be responsible for the management of this.
4. To manage the Cambridge shop in accord with established policies and procedures.
These policies / standards include pricing methods, and procedures that outline
optimum use of our retail space.
5. Organise and maintain a record of the shop’s Health and Safety requirements.
6. To ensure the image and promotional activities of the shops are in line with
Amnesty’s Brand.
7. To work closely with the Retail Manager and the Finance Department to ensure that
specified financial controls are operated, and that accurate financial returns are
made.
8. To oversee shop fitting, and manage the maintenance of the shop, including the
sourcing of suppliers / contractor, and generating quotes for works as required.
9. To create opportunities for the shop volunteers to share learning, including the
production of newsletters, meetings, and the annual Shops Forum.
10. To manage the recruitment of shop personnel and guide the establishment of a well
run team.
11. To develop and run training sessions for the shop volunteers covering all aspects of
Books for Amnesty retailing. This will include an induction process, pricing books and
the Operations Manual.
12. To establish a marketing plan for the Cambridge shop in liaison with the Retail
Manager. This should include the establishment of appropriate Business to Business
relationships.
13. Respond to enquiries regarding the Books for Amnesty chain. This includes coordinating the collection of stock donations, and the establishment of the database of
bookshop supporters.
14. To follow Books for Amnesty customer care standards and devise working practice to
ensure the highest standards of customer care are provided to all those using the
bookshop.
15. To ensure that shop/office volunteers and or activists and members contribute
effectively to the work of AIUK, by establishing and maintaining appropriate working
relationships.
16. To work with the team to develop and achieve Team objectives and plans.
17. To take responsibility for their own health, safety and welfare, comply with AIUK H&S
policy and procedures, and not act in any way that compromises the safety of
themselves, colleagues or the public.
18. To manage the health and safety of volunteers, including conducting risk
assessments as appropriate, and ensuring they have access to, and participate in,
appropriate instruction, training and supervision.
19. To deliver all aspects of this job description in accordance with AI UK’s Equality and
