Summary
Assess and provide sales forecasts for new site locations. Manage a geographical region in terms
of providing forecasts for the sales impact from competitor openings.
Principle Accountabilities


Produce timely, accurate, strategic and commercial sales forecasts and board papers,
supporting delivery of the corporate capital plan for new store and existing store
investment opportunities.
Implement and maintain an audit trail detailing the key components of each scheme

Provide clear recommendations to the Capital Investment team and key stakeholders in
Property regarding the appropriate size and offer for potential new stores and
extensions.

Support the strategic development and maintenance of network plans providing
recommendations to the team and other stakeholders in terms of optimum store size
and offer.

Provide insight and understanding in support of recommendations through integrating
location surveys, geographic expertise and sales/customer trends.

Ensure analysis and recommendations are robust by using a full range of appropriate
tools, analytic techniques and input from other areas (e.g. bespoke customer analysis,
post investment reviews, sensitivities, customer research, engaging Financial Appraisal,
macro-space, store planning and others).

Provide ad hoc analysis as required.

Offer location planning expertise and support to key stakeholders and other Sainsbury’s
business areas.
Perform timely and insightful post investment reviews.
Work with the head of location planning to change methodologies and approaches to
meet rapidly evolving and changing business needs


Core Areas of Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Excellent analytical skills. Able to synthesise and analyse a wide variety of data while
keeping customer needs top of mind. Recognition that the customer is at the heart of
all capital investment decisions.

Able to present analysis and recommendations in a logical, concise way.

Core knowledge of GIS, e.g. functionality and systems capabilities.

Ability to integrate quantitative (nectar and census data etc.) and qualitative
information (retail feedback, customer research, etc.) to support investment decisions.

Ability to challenge, stretch and develop existing methodologies and approaches
beyond business as usual.

Good planning, organisational and prioritisation skills.

Ability to communicate with colleagues from different disciplines and work crossfunctionally.

Willing and able to challenge accepted practices and processes.

Structured approach to work with clear deadline focus.

Strong technical skills, especially in Excel.

Core knowledge of GIS, e.g. the functionality and systems capabilities.
Qualifications


Good degree, ideally in a Business related subject, Geography, Economics or
Mathematics.
Highly numerate, ideally with Maths A level.

Clean driving licence.

Summary
To manage a geographical zone in terms of all location planning requirements; set a targeted
network plan to successfully focus resource on the rights sites, forecast accurate sales for new
stores & extensions and understand new store performance and impacts from competitor
openings. Own the relationship with Retail and Property Development.
Principle Accountabilities












Prioritise & manage location planning requirements for assigned zone
Manage relationships with Retail and Property in relevant zone
Manage appropriate resourcing to meet zone needs
Produce timely and accurate sales forecasts for new stores and extensions
Make strategic and commercial recommendations on new site and extension proposals
Prepare clear, accurate papers for Investment Board / CCM
Challenge proposals that do not meet network plan requirements or are not in the best
strategic interests of the company
Assist development of Location Planners
Be an expert on retail landscape and population and demographic change in relevant
zone, with good general working knowledge of remainder of UK
Maintain network plan for relevant zone
Contribute to improving assessment methodology
Assist on Post Implementation Reviews of investments
Contribute to Team knowledge & spirit
Good knowledge of competing retailers and retail formats

2-3 years relevant experience
