LMES * AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM * SPRING 2013
WALK-IN REGISTRATION: Tuesday April 30, 2013 * 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM * IN THE LMES CAFETORIUM
The LMES PTO is proud to announce the 12th year of the Long Meadow Elementary Enrichment Program.
Below is a list of course offerings for this Spring session. Courses will be offered at the end of the school day, and will meet
once weekly for FIVE weeks. Should school be cancelled on the day of your scheduled class, the class will be cancelled and
a make-up class will be offered at the instructor’s discretion. There will be no refunds and no exceptions. The tuition charges
will be used to pay the instructors. Some of the instructors are not certified teachers but has a special skill or interest they
would like to share with our children. If you would like your child to participate in this program please fill out the registration
section on the reverse side and come to the walk in registration with a check made payable to the LMES PTO. No mail in
registrations will be accepted. Payment is due at the time of registration, we cannot accept registration without
payment*. Registration is on a first come first served basis. Do not send the registration into school with your child.
You will be required to write a note to your child's teacher each enrichment class day indicating your child will be staying after school to
participate in Enrichment.
Please note CHANGES TO PICKUP PROCEDURE – Instructors will be escorting their classes to the front lobby of LMES at dismissal. It is
your responsibility to promptly retrieve your child at 4:45 in the front lobby.
 TennisMadeSimple for kids : Wednesdays - Grades 1-5 A creative, fun and easy way of learning tennis that gets fast results. Scaled
down courts, racquets and slower balls are used. Skills reinforced through fun instructional games and personalized tips. Age
appropriate racquets available for an additional $5.00 to rent, or $25.00 to purchase. Taught by Val Stoiana, certified tennis
professional and formerly ranked collegiate and tour player. Min 6 – Max 15
 Introduction to Martial Arts : Tuesdays - Grades 1-5 Students will gain an understanding for the values and benefits of Karate
training, from increased focus, to developing all out effort. Students will learn basic Tang Soo Do techniques and have an
opportunity to break a real board at their final class. Class taught by Jeff O’Sullivan – black belt. Min 5 – Max 15
 “Yogacise” : Thursdays - Grades 1-5 “Yogacise” will consist of a fun filled hour of fitness activities, dance, games and yoga. We will
explore the excitement of fitness with the relaxation of yoga. Class taught by Mr. Derouin and Mrs. McVerry. Min 10 – Max 20
 Crazy Chemworks : Thursdays - Grades 1-3 Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as you launch your chemistry career with some
awesome laboratory experiments. Manipulate matter in all of it’s three states, ooze into fun when sliming around and probe the
properties of light with spectacular glow-in-the-dark technology. Taught by staff of Mad Science. Min 12 – Max 20
 Lego Robotics: Tuesdays - Grades 3-5 Children can build and program their own robotic creations. Designed by the experts at
MIT, this unique system teaches children about simple machines, engineering, computer programming and so much more. We will
be building a soccer team complete with cheering fans. Taught by staff of Computer Tots. Min 6 – Max 12
 How Cool Is That – Hands on Science: Wednesdays – Grades 4-5 Messy yet educational science activities for children!! Hand’s
on, interactive, age appropriate new experiments each week including; Dissecting owl pellets, Shampoo analysis and the science of
Tie-Dye. Kids have fun while experimenting and all materials are supplied. Class is taught by Velya Jancz-Urban, owner. Velya
taught English and History at Ridgefield High School and for eight years was the elementary Gifted/Enrichment teacher for Regional
School District #12. Min 8 – Max 16
 The Game of Chess: Fridays – Grades 3-5 Students of all chess levels are welcome, from the beginner with no experience to those
who wish to improve their game, this class will offer you challenges. Beginners will be instructed on piece movement and chess
rules. All students will learn through playing matches against similarly skilled opponents, with instructor advice given after
matches. Each week a new chess tip will be discussed and a challenge question will be given. Taught by Jeff O’Sullivan. Min 8 –
Max 20
 Art in Spring: Wednesdays – Grades 1-5 Join us to explore Spring through art. Children will create a series of art based on
“Spring.” They will have a special chance to try several new mediums including… mixed medium art, 3-d nature sculpture with new
and fun things, printmaking, and clay pressings with clippings from nature. Taught by Kate Gorham owner of The Golden Button.
Min 8 – Max 20
 Hip Hop Dance: Fridays – Grades 1-5 Hip Hop is a fun and energetic dance to showcase the dancers unique and individual style.
Children will learn new moves each week to practice and perform in a routine at the end of each class. No dance experience
necessary, just come ready to move and groove. Gym attire should be worn. Taught by Christina Leary or Pointe to Perfection.

This season we are asking for parent volunteer(s) to help on the day of their child(ren)s scheduled class. One parent volunteer
per day is needed. The volunteer parent will be in the building to assure the children get to their assigned rooms, and then
monitor pickup in the lobby. Parents must remain in building during class Any parent wishing to help will get a reduced tuition
for their child. Please check the box on the registration form, indicating that you wish to be part of our Enrichment Program and
make sure to print your name.
