Job Title: Program Manager/Community Organizer
Organization/Program: FPHNY- WK Kellogg Breastfeeding Initiative
Location: Brooklyn District Public Health Office, 485 Throop Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11221
Position reports to: Deputy Director, Brooklyn District Public Health Office
The Fund for Public Health in New York, Inc. (FPHNY) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that
is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in
partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH),
FPHNY implements programs to address pressing public health needs, fosters private sector
support to enhance health and health care, and helps educate the public regarding the protection
of individual, family and community health.
Brooklyn Breastfeeding Empowerment Zone
The Breastfeeding Empowerment Zone (BFEZ) Project will target specific geographic areas
within North/Central Brooklyn (Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville) to provide
comprehensive, multi-level initiatives to encourage and support breastfeeding, addressing both
gaps in breastfeeding education and practice as well as broader social determinants of health.
The BFEZ Project will focus on male involvement in breastfeeding, local capacity building and
economic development, community mobilization, community education and media, and direct
services comprised of breastfeeding consultations, home visits, and support groups.
Program Manager/Community Organizer Position Overview
The BFEZ Program Manager will work on behalf of the NYC Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene and will be responsible for overseeing the overall management of the BFEZ project,
including overseeing program staff, subcontractors, program implementation and evaluation. The
Program Manager will work under the guidance of the DOHMH Brooklyn District Public Health
Office (BK-DPHO) and will report directly to the DPHO Deputy Director to ensure that the
program is implemented as outlined.
Key responsibilities of the Project Manager include the following:
o Administration
 Oversee implementation of the project work plan
 Supervise grant staff and grant subcontractors
 Manage program budget and administrative duties
o Community Mobilization
 Develop community partnerships and collaborations
 Engage local community organizations and businesses to establish breastfeeding
friendly policy guidelines within their organizations
 Work collaboratively with community-based organizations that currently provide
breastfeeding support and education to enhance and/or expand services

Provide support to local community organizations in the coordination of public
events that promote breastfeeding
 Collaborate with the Office of Minority Health in the implementation of a
breastfeeding support program for places of worship
o Media Development and Community Education
 Organize development and implementation of a breastfeeding public awareness
campaign
o Evaluation and Quality Assurance
 Evaluate BFEZ Project using process and outcome evaluation measures in
collaboration with program evaluator, DOHMH staff, and partner organizations
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A Master’s degree in either public health, public policy, public or business administration or
related field and at least 5 years of professional experience in either project management, health
education, public policy and planning, community organizing, or a satisfactory equivalent.
PREFERRED SKILLS/ CREDENTIALS:
The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of experience working on male involvement and/or
fatherhood programs, preferably in Brooklyn; have the ability to effectively network with both
high-level institutional leadership as well as engage with core local organizations and community
groups; have direct experience with health issues, media campaigns, overseeing work plans and
resources; have knowledge of maternal and infant child health issues; ability to manage
strategies, communication and administrative activities; have experience conducting program
evaluations and quality assurance activities; experience working on grant funded programs; and
have excellent communication skills.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
FPHNY offers a comprehensive benefits package. Salary is commensurate with experience and
salary history, up to $73,000. This position has been funded through February 2016 with
possibility of an extension.
