Interpreter List
Certified and Qualified Sign Language Community Interpreters in
Southern Nevada
There are various types of certifications that interpreters possess in order to comply with NRS656a
(Nevada Interpreter Certification Standards). The skill level of interpreters is determined by their
certification/assessment results. These levels are explained three different ways:
a. Master: If an interpreter is at the Master level, it means on of two things. They are nationally
certified as a Master by passing a comprehensive test issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the
Deaf. The other possibility is the interpreter has passed a comprehensive test issued by the
American Consortium of Certified Interpreters/ National Association for the Deaf with the highest
score possible on the test. If an interpreter is at the Master level, they are the most qualified for
placement in a variety of community settings (EX: legal situations, medical situations, mental health,
etc.)
b. Advanced: If an interpreter is at the Advanced level, it means the interpreter is nationally certified
by passing a comprehensive test issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf/National
Association of the Deaf with a score within a high range of a professional interpreter. Interpreters at
the advanced level are highly qualified for placement in a variety of community settings (EX: job
interviews, medical appointments, legal situations, etc.)
c. Skilled: E If an interpreter is at the Skilled level, it means one of two things. They are either
nationally certified by passing a comprehensive test issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the
Deaf/National Association of the Deaf with a score that falls within a standard range of a
professional interpreter. The other possibility is the interpreter passed the Educational Interpreter
Performance Assessment (EIPA) exam with a high score. IF an interpreter is at the Skilled level, they
are qualified in a variety of non-critical community settings (EX: job interviews) but may only
interpret in legal situations, medical appointments, and postsecondary education with due care.
The following directory lists the interpreters based on their certification levels. On the top of the list you
will find the most highly qualified interpreters of Southern Nevada. If you have any questions regarding
the proficiency levels and/or certification meanings, please feel free to contact the DHHARC office at
