Practice Eligibility Route for Subspecialists (PER-sub) Applicant Criteria for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) -DRAFTTime in Education and Practice Applicants must complete one of the following three combined criteria for time in practice and education. During the transition phase, those physicians who complete their training in an accredited Royal College psychiatry program between 2012 and 2014 may apply for certification through this route. 1. Minimum of five years in practice after completion of: a. 12 months of CAP training or training considered relevant to CAP within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program OR b. 6 months of PGY2-3 child and adolescent training within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program and 6 months in a Canadian university sponsored CAP fellowship program or an ACGME CAP residency program completed prior to 2009 or a combination of these types of training equaling no less than 12 months Practice must include: over 50% of the applicant’s practice in CAP incorporating evidence of significant CAP contribution consolidated in a minimum of 4 CanMEDS roles. 20% of the practice must involve direct or indirect patient/family care or program consultation OR 2. Minimum of 2 years in practice after completion of: a. 18 months of CAP training or training considered relevant to CAP within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program OR b. 6 months of PGY2-3 child and adolescent training within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program and 12 months in a Canadian university sponsored CAP fellowship program or an ACGME CAP residency program completed prior to 2009 or a combination of these types of training equaling no less than 18 months Practice time must include: over 50% of the applicant’s practice in CAP incorporating evidence of significant CAP contribution consolidated in a minimum of 4 CanMEDS roles. 20% of the practice must involve direct or indirect patient/family care or program consultation OR 3. Minimum of 1 year in practice after completion of: a. 24 months of CAP training or training considered relevant to CAP within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program OR b. 6 months of PGY2-3 child and adolescent training within a Royal College accredited psychiatry program and 18 months in a Canadian university sponsored CAP fellowship program or an ACGME CAP residency program completed prior to 2009 or a combination of these types of training equaling no less than 24 months Practice time must include: over 50% of the applicant’s practice in CAP incorporating evidence of significant CAP contribution consolidated in a minimum of 4 CanMEDS roles. 20% of the practice must involve direct or indirect patient/family care or program consultation A Comprehensive Competency Report (CCR) Must include: a. Two sources of practice competency feedback, one of which must be a physician, acceptable to the assessors and knowledgeable about the applicant’s practice. This may be obtained through letters of attestation containing pertinent information about the applicant’s practice from physicians or other mental health professionals or mental health program administrators. CAP Psychiatrists in academic or hospital/community practice should provide feedback from at least one physician in a supervisory or senior role such as a Dean of Health Sciences, a Department Chair, a Division Head, Chief of Staff, Chair of a Medical Advisory Committee or formal training program supervisor. CAP Psychiatrists in community practice should provide feedback from at least one physician with whom there is a consultative or collaborative care practice relationship. b. Acceptable verified scope of practice evaluated by assessors or another form of acceptable practice audit.
