SPRING INTERNSHIP - NEW YORK SCHOOL OF INTERIOR DESIGN ARCHIVES
(unpaid)
Founded in 1916, the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is New York’s only private,
not-for-profit college devoted to the design of the interior environment. It is dedicated to the
advancement of the discipline of interior design through education, research, professional
development, public programs, and community outreach. Critical to its mission is the
engagement with New York City’s cultural institutions, access to design resources, and its
immersion in the city’s economy.
The Library at the New York School of Interior Design is one of the only educational collections
devoted to the practice and profession of Interior Design in the United States. A full time
librarian has been on staff at NYSID since 1964, and the library sits in its third space during that
time. Both library services and collections have grown significantly over the years. Currently, the
collection holds 15,000 volumes that include books on architecture, design, decorative arts,
décor, art history, construction codes and standards and sustainable design. The library also holds
a range of material types, from books and journals, to digital images and audiovisual and
manages a materials collection. NYSID is in the process of founding an archive and would like
to first organize and create strong access points to its own institutional history leading up to its
Centennial in 1916.
