FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW LED STREET LIGHT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE SEE OUR CITIES
LED Roadway Lighting Ltd’s new Satellite Series LED street light promises
environmental and cost saving benefits.
Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 18, 2010 – With the cost of energy continuing to rise on an annual
basis, LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. is making it possible for cities to cut their lighting infrastructure
spending by up to 80%.
LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. has released a new small body LED street light fixture. The SAT-S is part of
the company’s “Satellite Series” of lights which, like their name sake, were designed to be
maintenance free for 20 years.
“It is important to consider that this fixture not only consumes up to 80% less energy”, says Charles
Cartmill, President of LED Roadway Lighting Ltd, “but it achieves this while maintaining or exceeding
the light levels of the fixtures that it was designed to replace. We wanted to produce a fixture that
would further improve the lifecycle costing benefits of our fixtures. The answer was to create a
smaller sized fixture, thereby lowering the initial cost, without compromising the quality of light
output.”
Cartmill believes that this light fixture will revolutionize the way municipalities think about street
lighting. “Most cities in North America are using fixtures that cost the end user exorbitant amounts
of money, whether it is the utility who provides the light, the tax payer who has bought the light, or
...more
the individual consumer who pays via their electricity bill,” says Cartmill. “We are confident that if a
utility company or municipality installs our Satellite fixtures they will find proportionally huge
savings making a big difference in the way they do business.”
The most widely used street light source in North America is High Pressure Sodium (HPS) which
typically casts an orange or yellow light. The potential savings is an investment that is hard for
municipalities to resist.
In early September, the Halifax Regional Municipality became the first major Canadian municipality
to convert to LED street light fixtures. Through a 1.6 million dollar investment, HRM purchased 2,137
LED street light fixtures from LED Roadway Lighting Limited.
HRM Mayor Peter Kelly welcomed the move, noting the significant economic saving to taxpayers as
well as the important contribution to the environment.
“With annual increases in energy costs, this will allow us to cut our lighting infrastructure spending
by as much as two-thirds over the next 20 years,” Mayor Kelly said. “As well, these fixtures will play a
vital role in our continuing efforts to make HRM one of the greenest cities in North America.”
“HRM deserves to be acknowledged for their vision and environmental leadership,” says Cartmill. “I
believe that Halifax is only the beginning of what will become a revolutionary change in how major
cities across Canada and the United States will use our street lights to not only provide better light to
their citizens, but as a way to see huge energy savings while reducing their carbon footprints.”
LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. is part of the Cartmill Group of companies and was founded in 2006 with
the goal of developing the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly street light in the
world. The successful launch of their Satellite Series LED street lights can be seen in over 200
locations across 9 countries.
