Key Areas of Learning
As Historians we will find out about prehistory and changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We
will investigate how people lived and the possible meanings behind some of the monuments that have been
left on our landscape. We will then look at the impact of the Roman Empire on Britain which will include the
strength and extent of the Roman Empire, the successful invasion of Britain and British resistance. We will
consider the lasting impact of the Romans on Britain.
Pre History and the Romans
Year 4 - Autumn term 1 and 2
As Geographers we will look at the locations of prehistoric settlements and Roman towns in Britain. We will
look at the extent of the Roman Empire across Europe and beyond.
As Scientists we will explore changes of state and human digestion with stories.
As artists and designers we will investigate and recreate cave paintings, design and make Roman mosaics and
chariots and prepare and cook bread.
LITERACY
As a class we will be reading and
discussing Stone Age Boy by
Satoshi Kitamura and Julia
Jarman’s ‘The Time Travelling Cat
and the Roman Eagle.
To develop non-fiction skills we
will be writing newspaper
reports, diary entries and
instructions to reflect our topics.
Children will learn to improve
their skills in using accurate
spelling, punctuation and
grammar.
Enterprise
As enterprising pupils we will:

Participate in all school activities with

We will be developing our
understanding of why harvest is
important and the effects of
famine. We will consider symbols in
the Christian church as well as the
festivals of advent and Christmas.
PSHE
Through the themes of ‘New
Beginnings’ and ‘Going for goals’ we
will explore motivation and passion
for learning. We will discuss the
importance of respecting others .
They will learn about coding using
Espresso.
Environment
As pupils concerned with the environment we will:

Use all school resources carefully and
ensure we recycle wherever possible.

Show respect for our surroundings both
in the school and grounds and in the
wider community.
We will be developing our skills in
invasion games such as tag rugby
and football. We will be performing
sequences of movements in
gymnastics and dance involving
balance and symmetry together
with Roaman Army formations.
MUSIC
COMPUTING
Children will learn use IT to
investigate answers to questions in
topic work.
PE
Children will learn and perform a
variety of music with a particular
focus on beat and rhythm to
emulate soldiers marching.
SMSC
