Mentoring
Whether I am doing tutoring or counselling, all of my work has a mentoring dimension.
Mentoring means meeting someone where they are and helping them to move along their own
chosen path.
I follow the principles of Carl Rogers “client-centered” therapy. This is a non-coercive, noninvasive approach in which the student/client is given the freedom and responsibility for
choosing his/her path.
My approach is holistic. I work with the whole child: mind, body, heart and soul.
Non-verbal communication is an important part of my work. Play and art are two natural
languages of children. They allow the child to express emotion, exercise the will, resolve internal
conflicts, build social skills and bond with others.
The mind-body connection is an essential aspect of cognitive functioning and personal wellbeing. Sensory processing exercises such as light squeezing of the hands and/or feet enhance
focus, verbal functioning and reduce stress. Further information on this technique can be found
on my website under “mentoring.”
Bibliotherapy means using books and stories to explore thoughts, feelings and life experiences.
Reading and writing stories is an essential part of my approach. Through stories I am able to
discover the child’s interests, temperament and aspirations.
Parents are always welcome to sit in on part or all of my mentoring sessions.
In my writing and public speaking, I emphasize the three foundations of core self-esteem.
To be seen...for who you really are.
To be listened to…no matter what you say
To be touched…with nurturing affection
These three principles form the foundation of my work as a mentor.
