Jackie French and Bruce Whatley
Flood was written by Jackie French in 2011. It is a story about a real event, the Queesnland
floods in Janurary 2011.
Open a new Word document and save it into your U drive, called Flood. Type your answers to
each of the questions. Make sure you write your answers in sentences. (OR you can type your

1. Go to World Book Online

search for information about floods. The
user id is terreyhps, the password is school.
Go to World Book Student. In the search
box, type Flash Flood. Answer these
questions.

"The cattle dog looks out and sniffs the air. At first the rain is a welcome arrival after the dry
spell, and the land looks green again. However the rain soon becomes too heavy and causes a
surge into the river. The river bursts its banks and the water flows into the town, causing a
great flood. Everyone is scared as they escape onto roofs and into boats. The flood causes a lot
of destruction to homes and buildings, and even the boardwalk gets swept away down the
swollen river. But there are lots of brave heroes, like the tug boat that stops the board walk
from crashing into the bridge, and the strangers that wade into the water to rescue people. As
the water finally recedes lots of people came to help with the clean-up and to offer food and
hope."
a. What is "a surge in the river'?
b.The boardwalk which was swept down the river weighed 300 tonnes. The Gateway Bridge is a
large bridge across the river. What do you think might have happened if the boardwalk had
collided with one of the pylons of the Gateway Bridge? What stopped this from happening?

4. Look inside the book to answer these questions:
a. On the title page: who published the book? Who received a free copy?
b. Inside back cover: There are 2 dedications - who wrote them and who are they dedicated to?
There is a motto - a saying - what is it?
c. Second and third last pages: why do you think the boy is hugging the dog? Read Jackie
French's story - why do you think she decided to write about the Queensland floods? Bruce
Whatley calls the heroes of the floods giants - do you agree with him? Why?

long did it take you?
6. After you have read the book, go to the cloze passage
(http://members.ozemail.com.au/~irenelesley/public_html/FloodCloze.htm ), and fill in the missing words. When you
have finished, click on the Check button. Use the Snipping Tool in Windows 7 to capture the
cloze. Save it to your U drive as Flood Cloze. Then insert it into this Word document as a
picture.
7. Listen to the Story of Tiddalick here (http://frogs.org.au/arc/storyoftiddalik.php ). Write a short summary
of what the legend is about in your Word document.
8. Create a Wordle (http://www.wordle.net/ )or a Tagxedo (http://www.tagxedo.com/ ) about Flood. Go to the
Web 2 Tools blog if you need help with these programs. Use the Snipping Tool in Windows 7 to
capture the word cloud. Save it to your U drive as Flood Wordle or Flood Tagxedo. Then insert
it into this Word document as a picture.
9. After you have typed up all your answers and added your pictures, you can send your
completed Word document to suzanne.crawford@det.nsw.edu.au
