As we head towards the end of our first season and into finals, it’s time to start looking ahead
to next season. This month’s newsletter will include some key dates and information for next
season.
We also want to hear your thoughts on attending a tournament later in the year.

SportPower will be hosting a Spartans Shopping Night on Tuesday May 29!
NEXT SEASON
Please be aware that the MBA are transitioning to a Summer/Winter season schedule and as
a result, the seasons will be a little shorter this year.
Finals for this season will begin next week with Grand Finals concluding on Saturday June 2
(Under 8 and Under 10 B Grade do not play finals). We will then have a break over Queen’s
Birthday Weekend and we will start our new season shortly after. This season will run until the
end of Term 3 with the new full season starting in Term 4 and continuing through until the end
of Term 1 2013. Seasons will then continue to run April-September and October-March in the
future. You will receive more information on this shortly.
As the age groups do not change next season, we plan to continue with the current
structure of all teams. There may be a couple of new teams or some splitting to
accommodate new players, however it seems most teams will continue as they did this
season. This will allow them to build on the momentum from this season and continue to ‘gel’
as a team.
Training times/venues should also remain the same.
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: JUNIOR COACHES
We are currently seeking coaches to join our Spartans Coaching Team for next season. If you
have a passion for junior basketball and coaching children, we would love to have you on
board!
The Spartans Basketball Club will assist you with guidance and support, a Spartans Coaches
Manual and enrolment in a coaching course to help you learn the basics of coaching junior
basketball.

We have received samples for our Spartans hoodie and will be taking orders. Allyson
(Uniform Coordinator) will be at the Rec on Saturday- so you can try them on, see the quality
and place your order. You will need to pay on the day to ensure your hoodie is included in
our first order.

SportsPower Melton will be holding an exclusive Spartans Shopping Night where all Spartans

GREATER WESTERN TOURNAMENT
The Spartans Basketball Club are currently making plans to enter teams in the Greater
Western Tournament later this year. We see this as a great opportunity for players to
compete outside of the MBA domestic competition and also a fantastic club bonding
experience!

The Tournament is held in the September schools holiday over a weekend (Friday night to
Sunday) with games played at Altona and Keilor stadiums. The cost has not been released
as yet but we estimate a maximum of $30-40 per player for registration, stadium entry plus
minimum four games and finals.
We would like to take as many teams as possible, however this is optional. We are giving
plenty of notice for families to plan accordingly and your team manager will be in contact
shortly to confirm availability.

Zealand won the Championship).
DRILLS OF THE MONTH!
Each month we will choose one special skill or drill for those players who want to become
better basketball players.
Two-Ball Dribbling
Get two basketballs and try to bounce one in each hand at the same time. Start by trying to
bounce them at the same time in rhythm. To challenge yourself you can try to walk or jog as
you dribble or even crossover and switch hands.
This is a great drill to improve your ball handling skills and the use of your opposite hand.
