Bienvenue à Strasbourg en Alsace

Semaine du 21 octobre 2013

Did you know?

The Cathedral in Strasbourg, Alsace, France is one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in Europe. Its history goes way back to 1015. The construction of the cathedral as we know it today was begun in the late 12th century. The distinctive red stones from nearby mountains give the Cathedral its pink glow. It was completed around 1300 and for four centuries it was the tallest building the world.

As with many cathedrals in France, it was adorned with fabulous stained glass windows dating from the

12th to 14th centuries. During World War 2, all the stained glass windows were dismantled to protect them from bombings and stored in a nearby salt mine. Although the cathedral suffered some damage from bombs in 1944, the windows were safe. After the war they were restored to the cathedral.

You can take a virtual tour of the Strasbourg and its Cathedral by clicking on this link. Move the mouse around to get a 360 degree view. You will start in the town square where the Cathedral is the central focus. Then follow the arrows to enter the Cathedral, tour the various rooms and even go out on the roof to get a bird’s eye view of Strasbourg. Zoom in to get closer views of interesting sculpture and tapestries http://www.juste-pour-voir.eu/20100124Cathedrale/
