PEER EDITING the Rough Draft
DIRECTIONS:
A. Please exchange history report rough drafts with another student who also has a rough draft. Write E.B.
(edited by) & sign your name in RED INK on the bottom right side of title page.
B. CAREFULLY analyze rough draft using the step-by-step process below.
C. Follow instructions as guided below (underlining, circling, etc.)
D. If you observe a problem (or “possible problem,”) write the editing number below & a brief
comment on the left margin, next to the problem on the rough draft in red ink.
Example: if intro. has five sentences instead of three, write “#7 = too many sentences” in left
margin next to the intro.
E. After editing, return rough draft to author when instructed to do so. When receive your edited rough
draft back, THANK the editor & read comments carefully (discuss with editor if have questions.)
EDITING NUMBERS & COMMENTS:
TITLE PAGE
1. Is all information centered? (If yes, don’t write anything. If not, write a comment to remind them.)
2. Title in ALL caps?
3. Three “clusters” of information (top, middle & bottom?)
4. CIRCLE the number of words in the “Word Count.” (Comment IF NOT between 800-1,200 words!)
5. Correct date (either April 21 or 22?) NOTE: final Draft title page will have April 28 as the date.
6. Are there any SPELLING errors?! Any words that should be capitalized?
INTRODUCTION
7. Are there EXACTLY three sentences in the introduction? (Quote may be more than one sentence!)
8. Is the first sentence a quote? Does the first sentence end with an endnote? Does the endnote have the
required 3 pieces of info: author’s last name (or title of article) date & page #?
9. Underline the LAST sentence of the introduction. Carefully read this sentence. Does it appear to be the
thesis statement (yes or no?) Does it clearly answer all six questions (Who? What? When?
Where? Why? How?) If not, write which of the questions do not appear to be answered.
10. Does the thesis appear to be a run-on sentence (or is it “awkwardly worded?”)
BODY
11. All pages numbered correctly? (title page NOT numbered, report & works cited pgs. are numbered.)
Does each page have student’s last name and pg. number on top right?
12. Is there writing on the BACK of any of the pages?
13. Is report typed? Is report double spaced?
14. Skim report and CIRCLE any 1st person pronouns (I, me, my, mine, our, ours, we) or
any 2nd person pronouns (you, you’re, yours.)
15. Skim report and CIRCLE any possible SPELLING errors. Any words that should be capitalized?
16. Do all quotes (if any) have ENDNOTES immediately following? Do all endnotes have 3 pieces of info?
17. Do any of the paragraphs appear to be way too lengthy?
CONCLUSION
18. Are there EXACTLY three sentences in the conclusion?
19. Underline the FIRST sentence of the conclusion. Read & compare with original thesis in intro. Is this
a re-worded thesis that covers same basic info as thesis, but worded differently than thesis?
20. Which of the SIX questions are NOT clearly answered (if any) in the re-stated thesis?
21. Does the re-stated thesis appear to be a run-on sentence (or is it “awkwardly worded”?)
22. Is the LAST sentence a quote? Does quote end with an endnote? Does endnote have 3 pieces of info.?
WORKS CITED (is the word “Works” plural?)
23. Write the total number of sources used on top of the page. Are there fewer than three sources listed?!
24. Does works cited page appear to have been generated by EasyBib (alphabetical order, “hanging
indents” for every source, complete information, etc.?)
