Continental Wraps Up New Truck Tire Products for
the Holidays
 New wide single ContiTread and SmartWay verified drive tire available in December
Fort Mill, South Carolina, December 16, 2013. Retreaders, tire dealers and fleet customers
interested in Continental’s truck tires for the North American market are receiving some
exciting product news to top off the 2013 holiday season, John Barnes, ContiLifeCycle
manager for the Americas, said today.
“We are very happy to end the 2013 year on a high note for our ContiTread™ fleets and
licensed dealers by offering another new premium retread product,” Barnes said. “Today we
are announcing that our HTL1 wide single truck tire is now available as a ContiTread retread.
In 400 millimeter tread width, the HTL1 can be retreaded for fleets who operate wide single
drive or trailer tires in sizes 445/50R22.5 and 455/55R22.5, and is an excellent solution for
this special market concerned with weight and fuel savings.”
Wide single truck tires like the Continental HTL1® (Heavy Trailer Long Haul) are often used
in liquid and dry bulk hauling applications where weight is a concern, or by fleets seeking to
take advantage of weight savings for greater fuel efficiency by reducing the number of wheel
and rim assemblies. Continental’s HTL1 ContiTread matches the tread pattern of the new
tire, Barnes said, and features 13/32” tread depth as well as a fuel efficient rib pattern.
“This HTL1 ContiTread is a great addition to our retread business, because it allows us to
offer even more retreads to fleets who have a specific application or operating concern. The
400 millimeter width allows us greater flexibility in the casings we can accept, because now
we can retread casings with all the common sizes in this segment. It’s a great holiday gift for
ContiTread dealers like us, and our customers, to now be able to offer this product,” said
Scott Snyder, vice president and general manager of DLS Retreading, Inc., a ContiTread
licensee.

Continental Tire the Americas’ Commercial Vehicle Tire group also announced it has
recently received low rolling resistance retread technology verification for another new
product under the EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership. The HDR2 Eco Plus, a fuel
efficient drive tire which was verified a short time ago by SmartWay for use in drive positions
on class 8, line-haul tractors.
The EPA has determined that certain tire models can reduce NOx emissions and fuel use by 3
percent or more, relative to the best selling new tires for line haul class 8 tractor trailers,
according to the SmartWay Transport Partnership website. The HDR2 Eco Plus is now the 21st
in a line of Continental new and retreaded truck tire products that are currently listed as verified
by SmartWay, and the HTL1 ContiTread will be submitted to SmartWay for verification, Barnes
said.
The HDR2 (Heavy Drive Regional) Eco Plus features 30/32” tread depth, an open shoulder
design for excellent traction without sacrificing even wear, and gives approximately 20
percent less rolling resistance in regional applications than the HDR2. The tire is available in
sizes 11R22.5 and 295/75R22.5.
“It’s a great way to end 2013 by offering our customers more choices in new truck tires and
retreads than ever before,” said Paul Williams, executive vice president for truck tires, the
Americas. “Our HTL1 ContiTread and HDR2 Eco Plus drive tire are a nice addition to your
operations for the holiday season and will help lower your overall driving costs for 2014 and
beyond.”
