Title: Engineering - Gasification of biomass in Ghana

Description: The School of Engineering of the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting 3.5-year PhD project entitled ‘Gasification of biomass in Ghana’ within the Systems, Power and Energy Division in the School of Engineering. This is a collaborative project, Supervised and co-supervised by Drs Ian Watson (Glasgow) and Richard Lord at the

University of Strathclyde, respectively.

Gasification offers an opportunity to produce fuel for different applications, such as electricity production or thermal use; biomass utilisation offers sustainability of the energy and power production. The successful applicant will assess options for maximising the energy extraction from waste products from a palm oil processing plant, based in Ghana. This will primarily include gasification, but with other novel approaches investigated in parallel. The performance of the gasification system will be quantified and process optimisation models developed. The potential of other biomass resources, e.g. microalgae, and their suitability for integration into the plant will be critically evaluated along with emerging technologies for process improvement. The potential of developing novel technology or processes to improve gasification and facilitate expansion of sustainable gasification and electricity production into other regions in Africa, and globally, will be investigated.

Funding Notes: Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK/EU applicants, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (£13,863 for Session 2014-2015).

Eligibility: Applicants must be EU/UK nationals.
