Words of Interest:
PEDIGREE
PED = FOOT
A pedigree is a written record of a line of ancestors. This information about ancestry is frequently
presented in a genealogical chart. The literal meaning of pedigree is “foot of a crane.” This word is
composed of the Latin bases PED meaning foot and GREE meaning crane. Pedigree became associated
with lineal descendancy because the mark of a crane’s foot resembled the lines of a genealogical chart.
