5.5 The Kingdoms of Living Things Study Guide
What are the 5 Kingdoms of living things?
Animal, Plant, Protist, Fungi, Monera
How are animals classified?
Animals may be classified as a vertebrate or invertebrate.
What is an invertebrate?
An animal without a backbone.
What is a vertebrate?
An animal with a backbone.
What are the subgroups of invertebrates?
The subgroups of in vertebrates are worms, spiny skins,
soft bodies (mollusks), arthropods, sponges, and stinging
cells.
What animals have stinging cells?
jellyfish, sea anemone, and coral.
What animals have spiny skins?
Animals that have spiny skins are the sea urchin, star fish.
What is a mollusk?
Mollusks are animals with soft bodies such as the snail,
clam, oyster, squid, and octopus.
What are arthropods?
Arthropods are invertebrates with an exoskeleton and
jointed feet, and have 6-10 legs (3- 5 Pair)
Name some arthropods.
Arthropods include insects, crabs, lobsters, spiders.
Name 3 characteristics of worms.
Many worms have segmented bodies, they can
regenerate new body parts, and some are parasites.
Name a unique characteristic of a sponge.
A sponge has no organs, no stomach, or mouth.
Name the five groups of vertebrates.
The 5 groups of vertebrates are the fish, birds, mammals,
reptiles, and amphibians.
Describe Amphibians.
Amphibians are frogs, salamanders, and toads. Frogs
begin will gills when they are young and later develop
lungs as adults. They are cold blooded.
Describe mammals
Mammals give birth to live young, are warm blooded,
produce milk, and have hair or fur.
Describe fish.
Fish are the largest group of vertebrates. They are cold
blooded and breathe through gills all their life.
Describe Reptiles.
Reptiles are cold blooded. They consist of lizards, snakes
and turtles.
Name the largest vertebrate group.
Fish
Describe birds.
Birds are warm blooded and they are the only animals
with feathers.
Name the 3 body parts of an insect.
The 3 parts are the head, abdomen, and thorax.
What organisms are classified as Protist?
The amoeba, paramecium, and algae are protists.
What organisms are classified as Monera?
Monera is also called bacteria.
What organism belongs to the kingdom fungi?
Mold, mushrooms are examples of fungi.
Name the 2 classifications of Plants.
Vascular and Nonvascular.
What kind of plants has xylem and phloem tubes?
Vascular Plants have xylem and phloem tubes.
What does the xylem and phloem do for the plant?
phloem carry food and xylem carries water and nutrients
throughout the plant.
Name 3 nonvascular plants.
Moss, lichen, and liverwort are nonvascular plants.
How do ferns and moss reproduce?
Ferns and moss reproduce by spores.
Explain the function of roots.
Roots anchor the plant and take in nutrients from soil.
Explain the function of the leaves.
Leaves are where the plant makes food.
Explain the function of the stems.
They support the plant and allow movement of water and
nutrients.
Describe the process of photosynthesis.
The plant takes in sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Along with these elements and the chlorophyll in the
plant it is able to make sugar for the plant and produce
oxygen.
