CPD update: NoWAL Board meeting June 18 2015
1. NoWAL conference: Where is the Library? Manchester Metropolitan University, Birley Campus
July 15th 2015
Programme and speakers have been confirmed and bookings are open until June 25th. The day rate
is pitched at £60 to cover costs and if delegate numbers exceed expectations, a modest profit. The
programme has a wide appeal and will be of interest to staff from across all service areas and
specialisms. The conference team has been keen to seek sponsorship to keep costs to a minimum
and have been successful in securing small amounts for specific activities, alongside a bursary
sponsored by Coutts, and a drinks and networking event at the end of the conference funded by Ex
Libris. Board members and senior staff are encouraged to attend for all or part of the day and if
available the networking event @ 4pm.
2. CPD planning 2015-16
Colleagues responsible for staff development in their local institution met in May to review the 1415 CDP events and draft the programme for 15-16.
Feedback from delegates and staff development representatives on the 14-15 programme was
extremely positive with the majority of delegates rating sessions from good to excellent. A few
suggested improvements for the organisation of the programme were raised and these included
 Clearer titles and descriptions of events.
 Identify target staff groups where appropriate in the pre-event publicity.
15-16 programme
 Visits
For all staff the opportunity to visit other libraries and network with colleagues is regarded as a
valuable development activity. Given the popularity of some destinations the proposal is to re-run
visits to the following
1. Manchester Central library and Special Collections/North West Film Archive
2. John Ryland’s Library Deansgate
3. Liverpool Central library
4. Media City– University of Salford
and include a potential new venue
5. Athenaeum Library, Liverpool
 15-16 topics
It was surprisingly easy to draft the programme for 15-16. Colleagues had clearly taken time to consult
with others in their institutions and arrived with a potential list of topics which were subject to an
iterative process of discussion before either including them in the draft programme or in some cases
combining topics, or postponing for review during the year. All institutions represented also
volunteered to either host or partner with another institution to deliver an event.
A suggestion which met with support from the group was the regular inclusion of one maybe two
events where heads/ directors of services provided their ‘point of view’ on a topic. The Board is asked
to support this proposal and to consider how it might be translated into an engaging and topical event.
Volunteers welcome!
The draft programme as discussed by colleagues is listed below and will be promoted on the NoWAL
website and by email once dates and details are confirmed.
