“Policy
The "Emeritus" title may be recommended for a faculty member who:
1.
retires from Oregon State University, and
2.
has held a position with indefinite tenure, generally on an active full-time
basis, for at least five years immediately prior to retirement, and
3.
has demonstrated professional competence and provided effective service to
the programs of the institution.
Procedure
1.
Submit nomination to the Office of Academics Affairs at least two months
prior to retirement (refer to sample letter on page 2).
2.

retirement/ tenure relinquishment of faculty who may be eligible for Emeritus
status.
3.
Dean/Director will present each recommendation in the form of a letter,
addressed to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, providing a brief description
and evaluation of the services the faculty member has rendered to the University,
including dates of employment and date of retirement or tenure relinquishment.
This letter will become part of the faculty member's permanent personnel records
file in the Office of Human Resources. It is important that the faculty member’s
post-retirement mailing address is included in the letter.
4.
Each faculty member receiving the title "Emeritus" will be advised of the
action by the President and Vice Provost through a letter. A copy of the letter will be
provided to the faculty member’s department/unit.

President, if the Emeritus form will be prepared by the department/unit

Use of Emeritus Title
The title "Emeritus" will be added to the academic rank (held at the time of
retirement) for faculty members whose services have been principally in teaching
and research (such as Professor Emeritus of History, or Associate Professor
Emeritus). Faculty members whose principal duty is as an academic executive
administrator may have the title "Emeritus" added to the administrative title held at
the time of retirement. The five approved academic executive administrator titles
are: President Emeritus, Provost Emeritus, Vice President Emeritus, Vice Provost
Emeritus and Dean Emeritus. In such cases, the title may also be added to their
academic rank (such as Dean Emeritus of the College of Science and Professor
Emeritus of Chemistry).
Emeritus Title Reflected in Banner
The title “Emeritus” will be recorded in Banner. Senior administrators granted
Emeritus status, however, will have the title of their administrative position at time
of retirement plus the Emeritus indicator (President Emeritus, Dean Emeritus, etc).
Those with Emeritus status must be affiliated with an active academic department
or unit. Data extracted and included in the OSU Directory, OSU Catalog, or other
university publications will be reflected accordingly.
Benefits
Emeritus status is to be effective for life of the faculty member. Emeriti faculty
members granted use of the library, may take courses at staff rates, receive parking
permits at a reduced rate, and may retain their faculty ID card. As with all other
retired faculty and staff, they may also purchase athletic season tickets at
faculty/staff rates and participate in the Faculty/Staff Fitness program. Emeriti
faculty members are not eligible for employee health benefits, vacation leave, or sick
leave.”

University of Tennessee, Knoxville

“Objective:
To recognize retiring faculty members or administrators for distinguished service to
the University of Tennessee over an extended period of time.
Who is affected:
Retiring faculty members who are professors at the time of retirement and
administrators retiring with the rank of president, dean, vice chancellor or provost
with a long and distinguished career with the University.
Procedure:
For faculty members and administrators of a campus or institute, the Dean or
Department head of the college or the Vice President of the institute, has the
authority to request emeritus status.
For administrators in the University system, the authority for requesting emeritus
status rests with the President.
The Chancellor, Vice President or President confers emeritus status by writing a
letter to the retiring employee, with a copy to the Human Resources office.
If the employee is retiring and will not return to paid status. Human Resources will
change the tenure info type in IRIS to emeritus after the letter is received.
If the employee will be rehired, the department will need to create a position with
the title of emeritus by processing an electronic position create/change form. Once
the position is created, the department can either process a record friend electronic
form, if the retiree will not be paid, or process the initial hire/rehire paper form.
For reporting purposes the emeritus status will need to be recorded on the tenure
info type. The person running the report should request information on active and
inactive employees to get an accurate count of all holders of emeritus status.
Note: Emeritus status is an honorary title for which no formal privileges are
available.”

1. “Eligibility:
Emeritus rank is conferred upon retiring academic faculty following
nominations made to the Board of Visitors by the president for the following
categories of employees:
•
tenured associate or full professors retiring after at least ten years of
service;
•
chair holders retiring with five years of continuous service;

after ten years service; and

who are retiring after at least ten years of service and are approved by
the provost through a special request from their school.
Emeritus status is an honor; membership in one of the above categories does not
automatically qualify a faculty member for emeritus status. The faculty member
must be recommended by his or her department and school in accordance with the
procedures below.
Department determines that a faculty member should be recommended for
emeritus status.
 The faculty member’s department chair submits a personnel action to their
dean’s office, notifying them of the faculty member’s retirement and
requesting approval of the appropriate emeritus title. Request should include
a brief letter of recommendation that stipulates the faculty member’s
qualifications for emeritus status.
 The dean submits a list of those retiring faculty being nominated for emeritus
status to the vice provost for administration in the Office of the Executive
Vice President and Provost.
 The Provost’s Office forwards a list of nominated faculty to the Office of the
President for review and submission to the Board of Visitors.
 If recommended by the president, the retiring faculty member’s name is
submitted to the Board of Visitors for consideration and approval at its next
regular meeting.
