Underworld Travel Brochure
Introduction: For this assignment, I am asking you to reflect upon your own value system. It
does not matter if you believe in an actual place called “Hell.” It does not matter whether you
believe in eternal punishment. Simply assume the existence of both.
History: In Italy, around 1300, lived a man who began exploring his own value system: Dante
Alighieri. What seemed to him truly good, truly evil? Dante presents himself as a character in the
poem and travels through the nine circles of Hell, watching with horror at the experience of each
sinner. As with most Europeans in the year 1300, Dante was a Roman Catholic and his hell
reflected his value system. As we look at Dante’s Inferno, notice each that each group of sinners
are assigned an appropriate and symbolic punishment for their “crime,” and that Dante alludes to
the Greek underworld on several occasions. This is exactly what you are being asked to do for
this assignment: create your own underworld! The underworld that you create will reflect
your value system. Please refer to your notes on the 9 circles of the Inferno to help you!
Assignment: As an individual in the 21st century, you may disagree with Dante’s value system.
It is now time to explore your own value system. Who will “reside” in your levels/circles of your
Inferno? Which sins are the worst and should be the farthest down? Devise your own suitable
(and school appropriate) punishments for each sin. After you have planned out your own
version of an underworld, you will present your ideas in a travel brochure. Your brochure
will be used by mortals residing on Earth who need a tour of your underworld to help them
prepare for the afterlife. You may create your travel brochure using Microsoft Publisher, a Word
Doc, poster, PPT, etc…
You travel brochure should include:
 Nine different paragraphs; each one focusing on the nine circles/levels your own Inferno.
Be sure to rank the sins from lesser to greater. Your paragraphs will include:
o The sin for that circle
o The relevant and SYMBOLIC punishment for the sin
o A VALID reason for why you consider your “sins” sinful
 Visual images of your underworld (can be pulled from the Internet or drawn)
 Headings to help readers differentiate the different circles/levels in your underworld
Points:
Each paragraph complete with sin, punishment, and reason= ___________/45 (5 points each)
At least 9 visual images with headings= _________/10
Properly formatted, typed, appealing and appropriate= ___________/10
Total: _________/65
